Exquisite

Wear your headphones and revel in this lush, evocative work. I first heard the "Love and Menace" theme at least fifteen years ago, and it always stuck with me. I'm very pleased Itunes carries this album, and I'm thrilled to have it on my ipod now!

Close enough

This album was originally released in the 90's and does what it does well--it's a pleasant sampler of Donaggio's work, some of his best known compositions, which he did for some of Brian DePalma's most memorable films (and it could be argued that the presence of Donaggio's wonderful music had something to do with those films being as memorable as they are). It's great that the album is on iTunes and it served me well for many years. However, it's not QUITE perfect...

First and most importantly, these are not the compositions as heard in the original films, from the original soundtracks, they're re-recordings. They're so close only certain people (like me!) would notice or care, but for those of us who do it's a big issue. There are many small differences from the original recordings--changes in tempo are most notable, fullness of sound is another. The most obvious one is the final track, "Body Double," which, while perfectly wonderful as is with its siren-song female vocals and hypnotizing 80's drive, sounds a bit like 1980's news station bumper music in the re-recording; there's just nothing like the original. Most of these tracks have been, or still are, available on CD and vinyl (though they are probably quite difficult to acquire at this point) and a purist simply can't be without them. However, as I titled this review, this collection is certainly close enough.

Secondly, by concentrating only on the DePalma scores we're deprived of some of Donaggio's other landmark themes: "Don't Look Now," "Tourist Trap" and "The Howling" certainly need representation in a collection, at least. But until that time, this album will have to do and, again, does quite well. Purchase it with confidence, soar along with the swirling strings, and enjoy!
