Album Review

With guest performances by the members of Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Barnett's Kind of Like Spitting comes off like Death Cab when they're angry. Bridges Worth Burning, the band's sixth and most fully realized album, crosses the emotion and sincere teenage angst of Bright Eyes with the jangling attack of Burning Airlines. "We Are Both Writers" shuffles from an upbeat, feel-good rant à la the Violent Femmes to the pained warble of Conor Oberst and "Following Days" takes a cue from Elvis Costello. Though the slow tracks like "I Want Out" just aren't as compelling as the up-tempo numbers, Bridges Worth Burning proves Kind of Like Spitting an indie force to be reckoned with. "Tyco Racing Set and a Christmas Story Fifteen Times This Lemonade Is Terrible" alone is a mini-epic as sprawling as the song's title.

First one...after 8 years of being released? Really???

I rarely take the time to write reviews, but since I noticed this album has had ZERO love, I had to do something.

It's January 26th, 2010...and I just decided to bust this album back out for the first time in years and MAN, what an emotional trip! The song writing is truly genius and gut wrenchingly honest and heart felt. Having seen Kind of Like Spitting touring for this record, the recording really captures Ben and the gangs raw energy from the stage.

The iTunes synopsis is pretty right on. The slower tracks are downers compared to the AMAZING upbeat tunes, but the soufulness in which the slower tunes are conveyed make theme essential.

I HIGHLY recommend giving this album a good couple of listens. I just recommended it to my close group of music junkie friends today and can't wait to hear their thoughts.

As a side note...Ben Gibbard can play the MF'in drums!!! ALWAYS have loved the drums on this album...way to go!
