iTunes Review

Pavement virtually defined indie-rock for the 1990s with their collapsing rhythms, sudden discordant guitar jabs, and cheeky, ironic lyrics delivered with near indifference. 1997’s Brighten the Corners was the band’s “return to form” after the experimental — and in hindsight now much appreciated — Wowee Zowee failed to connect with the immediacy of their previous output. Corners is more song oriented; the band’s ramshackle arrangements still lead the way, but the melodies are quicker to the point. The opening track, “Stereo,” sounds as if the band is still setting up the equipment as the tape rolls but the chorus reels everything in, while “Shady Lane” and “Date With Ikea” explode with urgent pop energy from their opening notes. Effective mellotron usage adds a trippy vibe to “Transport is Arranged.” “We Are Underused” employs classic southern-rock guitar licks. The band has matured without losing the excited spark of discovery that invigorates every cliché that’s turned on its head.

Paranormal activity

Last night I took the little lady out for steak and a movie (paranormal activity). During the movie, while I was eating my popcorn and drinking my soda, I was thinking brighten the corners is such a piece of splendid urban delight.

Brighten The Corners...to your life

This Album is the kicks, especially Shady Lane/J Vs. S. The Lyrics are so imaginative and creative it makes you smile forever...

Wo!

I will agree with most sources and critics that "Crooked Rain" and "Slanted & Enchanted" are the essentials (they are most the most revolutionary anyway). But, let's not overlook some of the other work done by the boys of Pavement! I can tall you right now, this albums feel is a little bit lighter compared to the doom ridden noise of "Slanted", so if you're looking for something that will fill air space with pleasant noise and rhythym, look no further than the nonsensistic (sic) lyrics of Malkmus and the well timed guitar riffs of the band.

Biography

Formed: 1989 in Stockton, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s

With their fractured songs, unexpected blasts of feedback, laconic vocals, cryptic literate lyrics, and defiant low-fidelity, Pavement were one of the most influential and distinctive bands to emerge from the American underground in the '90s. Pavement, along with Sebadoh, were the leaders of the lo-fi movement that dominated U.S. indie rock in the early '90s. Initially conceived as a studio project between guitarists/vocalists Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg in the '80s, Pavement gradually became...
