Album Review
Matthew Kerstein, formerly of the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, here resurfaces with a new band name, Brighton, MA (his birthplace), on a six-song, 32-minute EP that is wildly ambitious. Kerstein is never afraid to wear his influences on his sleeve; the anthemic lead-off track "Bet You Never Thought" sounds like Ian Hunter covering David Bowie's "Heroes," and Hunter and Bowie's primary antecedent Bob Dylan often comes to mind as well. Indeed, "Ballad for Cool Hand" sounds for much of its running time like what Dylan might have sounded like singing "Chimes of Freedom" with a Beatles for Sale arrangement. But Kerstein doesn't stay in 1964. Before the song's end, he has introduced a trombone theme, played by bassist Matt Priest, and the track comes to a close with an a cappella choral section. That is typical of the kind of unusual arranging the songs enjoy. Kerstein brings in a violin and a cello on three tracks, and he enjoys changing tempos to keep things interesting. Closing track "Horseracing" even boasts an apocalyptic crescendo with a musical car-crash climax out of "A Day in the Life." The arrangements are useful to vary the sound of Kerstein's simple, samey melodies and add flavor to his husky, world-weary voice, but they do not interfere with an appreciation of his wordy, poetic lyrics. By whatever name he chooses to operate under, Kerstein is an emerging singer/songwriter in an established style who is well worth watching.

Brighton, MA Unshackles The Music Industry From Certain & Indefinite Peonage
I Bet You Never Thought it would be like this. The world spinning out of control, MTV playing anything but music, the Good Kind of Crazy turned upside down and inside out, delivered as fool's gold to the masses who eat it up. Let them eat it all up. And they will. They are starving, deprived, ignorant. Feed them that copper pyrite. Brighton, MA is the antithesis of all that, Brithon, MA is pure & authentic unacknowledged and undiscovered Gold. I am here to tell you where to dig for it. I tell you I am in tune with what is still good in this world. It is like this. I know. I've been listening, and I am that friend who shows you out of the dark. Despite the destruction that is the gigantic hurricane made landfall at every coast all around the world of music, there is a place of immunity against it all, an alcove, a Graceland. That place birthed yet another child who fights on against the waves, who leans into the wind and goes right where he wants to be. There he and his outfit of pure gentlemen, heathens riddled with talent, they troupe together to win every last War of the Roses just for you. Get your spending money out and have it at the ready, for this is the consummate gambling event of your life. Every song in the starting gate today is Horseracing’s champion. Each will pay out odds of 40-1. When you winyYou'll dance and swing to the singing of Matt Kerstein. Your body will not be able to resist finding a way to bang it self along to the undulation delivered by Sammy Koentrup. It is like this. Matt Devon & Jim are the mortar, the underpinnings of greatness, without them everything might just fall apart at the seams. Every member of this wonderful band of men has found a way to make perfect for your ears to enjoy, and they will take you to the wonderful place that is Brighton, MA.
Very Promising
I can't wait to hear what this band does next. This album is so great! Very comfortable and familiar sounding without being overly derivative. I hear they have a new album coming out later this year. ......can't wait to hear it.
