iTunes Review

City and Colour is Canadian singer/songwriter Dallas Green (riffing on his own name there), formerly with the post-hardcore/screamo outfit Alexisonfire. Green’s second C&C outing sparkles in its stripped-down, vulnerable nakedness, with songs that are by turns warm and chilling, aching and joyous. Highlights include the gently spiraling “Constant Knot,” with Green sounding like a man about to come undone; the single, “Waiting…,” a bittersweet, mid-tempo number crackling with gentle percussion and a memorable guitar melody (and a few great lines, such as “a coma might feel better than this”); “The Death of Me,” a comparatively upbeat number with sprinting guitars and snare drum; the foot-stomping “Sleeping Sickness,” with guest Gordon Downie of The Tragically Hip; and two tracks, “Forgive Me” and “What Makes a Man?”, featuring Green’s reverb-drenched vocals and a hushed solemnity rivaling fellow plaid-wearing beardo Bon Iver’s own introspective work. City and Colour allows Green’s notable talent to be expressed with clarity and intimacy, and it’s a place he may want to dwell in for a while longer.

Oh man...

I've waited so long for the Special Edition of this album. It's become one of my favorites by far, and now that these demos are being released, I'm excited to hear how the master tracks sounded before he finalized them. It's hard to believe he only made 6,000 physical copies of this CD worldwide.... he'd sell so many more if he wanted to. I'm trying my best to find one.

the best album ive ever owned

how do you spell amazing?

C-I-T-Y A-N-D C-O-L-O-U-R. Seriously, Dallas Green's vocals would make even an iron-legged machine weak in the knees. This is folk-rock at its best. Best album of 2008? YES IT IS!

City and Colour was the solo acoustic project of Dallas Green, best known as the singer/guitarist for the Canadian post-hardcore band Alexisonfire. Born September 29, 1980, in St. Catharines, Ontario, Green served as a member of Helicon Blue before co-founding Alexisonfire in late 2001. Despite scant radio airplay, the band developed a strong fan following on the strength of their ferocious live shows, and their 2004 sophomore LP, Watch Out!, debuted in the Canadian Top Ten. At year's end Green issued...
