iTunes Review
An album of rare honesty and bare-bones power, Bring the Family almost didn't happen. Between record deals, John Hiatt recorded these tracks as demos in a mere four days; the results were so good that they were released by A&M in 1987 to immediate critical acclaim. Part of the album's magic is the chemistry Hiatt's achieves with guitarist Ry Cooder, bassist Nick Lowe, and drummer Jim Keltner. But it's the confessional songwriting that cuts especially deep here. Hiatt deals with his alcoholism and troubled marriage without flinching in tracks like "Alone in the Dark" and "Learning How to Love You." "A Thing Called Love" and "Memphis in the Meantime" rock with abandon, while the ballad "Have a Little Faith in Me" soars with gospel grace. Bring the Family captures an artist wrestling with his demons and rediscovering his muse. The results are an unqualified triumph.
Customer Reviews
Small subjects. Big insights.
While his contemporaries (Spingsteen, Mellencamp, Petty) go for big statements about broad themes (social insjustices, war, racism) John Hiatt makes the little things (relationships, self-image) matter most. Just like real life. Don't hesitate to buy this whole album as it is packed with devastatingly personal, confessional and tuneful songs written from an adult perspective rarely heard from in popular music.
Best of the best
If you are looking for a songwriter with heart, search no further. This is the best album of one of the best writers of our lifetimes. Whether it's struggling with his alcoholism, berating his own impulsiveness, or wistfully pondering love, Hiatt is honest and poetic. I dare you to say "Lipstick Sunset" is not one the most beautiful songs ever written. I urge anyone who has become a parent to deny the everyday truthfulness of "Your Dad Did." How much has his music touched my soul? My wife and I danced to "Have a Little Faith in Me" when we were married. We're still singing that tune.
Hiatt looks in the mirror for the first time
Hiatts first true introspective confessional album. The depths of addiction and family ties are illustrated beautifully. Everything on here is solid, but if you're strapped for cash, my recommendations are Memphis in the Meantime, Thing Called Love, Have a Little Faith, and Your Dad Did
