just beautiful.

Melpo Mene is not music, but a journey, and now that the lions have been unleashed, all can be transported to the hauntingly beautiful world of songwriter Erik Mattiasson. Pictures and scenarios are painted by a masterful use of language and set to soothing melodies, an unparalleled treat for the ears, mind, and soul. While at first your brain may show a bit of resistance when you attempt to wrap it around some of the deeper meanings hidden in often cryptic but insightful lyrics, you'll be in a state of nirvana when everything clicks. Following themes of their earlier album, Holes, Bring Out The Lions invites you to visit powerful but not perfect love, moral conflict, and the growth and journey of not only one person, but humanity as a whole. Perhaps you'll find yourself in one of these songs, or maybe the entire album will evoke something you never knew existed within you.

pillowy and sublime

This is a great record. I hadn't even realized it was used in a commercial before I stumbled on it. They mix a nice set of influences, from Belle and Sebastian and Death Cab, to a more international, french pop feel at times. The feel of the record washes over you, calmly, but demanding attention. It's produced well, but not overly so. There's some great instruments in there that keeps things interesting (horns, xylophones and some other percussions, and others). The guitars are reverby and spacey and remind me of Calla without the edge. At times I want the international influences to be stronger when it ventures too much into death cab territory, but this has been one of my favorite records of the summer. Check out "Snakes and Lions" and "Kling Klang Klock". And "Jedi" is just pure fun.

outstanding

This is a great album. If you like Ivy, or Alternative bands ( Death Cab) you will love this album. The best known tune is "I adore you" which was used by Volvo. Mepomene is the classic greek muse of music, meaning literally "the melodious one". This album is nothing if not melodious. Enjoy.

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Erik Mattiason, the man behind Melpo Mene, might have never reached an audience outside of his native Sweden if "I Adore You," the lead single from his second studio album, hadn't been featured in a popular Volvo advertisement in 2008. Naming his project for the Greek muse of tragedy, Mattiason began recording his folky, electronica-tinged songs in the early 2000s. He was signed to Imperial Recordings, the home of like-minded singer/songwriter Jose Gonzalez, in 2003, and his debut EP on that label,...
