Album Review
It could be argued that Jimmie's Chicken Shack's variation of Chili Pepper funk-metal sounds out of date in 1999, but it could be argued just as convincingly that it was out of date on their 1997 major-label debut, too. It just points out that the genre was sort of played-out by the end of the decade. Bring Your Own Stereo, Jimmies' sequel to Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope, pretty much follows through on its successor, delivering an energetic set of party rock. It doesn't push the boundaries much, but it thankfully isn't as outright juvenile as their earlier albums (although this remains quite sophomoric, naturally). In short, it's the kind of album that will please fans, without winning any new ones over.
Customer Reviews
1 of my all-time favorites
I fell in love with JCS when i first saw the video for "High" on MTV in 1997. The video was hilarious. It was a live concert in a barn with chicken feathers flying all over the place, and people moshing. Bring Your Own Stereo is not as hard as their 1st album. It has a lot of musical influences, ska, reggae, metal...etc. Jimi's voice isn't the greatest ever, but I think the music far outweighs that. I love the whole album, but my favorites are Spiraling, String of Pearls, Fill in the Blank, and Let's Get Flat. And don't forget about 30 Days, that songs the shiznit. Jimi Davies is pretty much the heart and soul of this band, and his songwriting abilities are grossly underrated. Some "respect" is lost because the style of music is alternative funk metal, but if you strip that away the lyrics and song themselves stand tall. And get ready for the new JCS album, FAIL ON CUE!
Not a distance record
This album has a great start with Lazy Boy and especially Do Right, however Jimmie seems to lose steam about half way through. iTunes has made all the work easy for this one, as I dont have to put the cd in to listen to 2 tracks. Good effort Jimmie, but just not working for me.
Amazing Music
This is an unbelievably good CD!!!!
