Album Review

Cutting Crew never deserved the hacking they received from critics. Music reviewers lined up to throttle Cutting Crew's debut album, Broadcast, when it was released in 1986. The slick guitar rock on Broadcast may not have wowed the rock & roll intelligentsia, but it's a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, an underrated collection of simple, heartfelt love songs and up-tempo pop that reside between the stylistic boundaries of new wave and mainstream rock. "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" and "I've Been in Love Before" immediately thrust Cutting Crew onto the U.S. charts; however, both songs aren't sufficient in summing up Broadcast's appeal. Nick VanEede's soulful croon is mesmerizing on "Any Colour" and "Sahara"; instead of bludgeoning the microphone with vocal histrionics common to late '80s rock, VanEede is thankfully restrained, imbuing every track with ample emotion. "Any Colour" should've been Cutting Crew's third hit, a moving tale of loneliness that easily draws the listener in, while the lovely "Sahara" captures the subtleties critics claimed Cutting Crew wasn't capable of. "One for the Mockingbird" and "Life in a Dangerous Time" are armed with stellar hooks. Cutting Crew somehow manages to incorporate guitar solos with the propulsive rhythms of U2 and the Fixx and the moody angst of Tears for Fears without sounding forced. Broadcast is not a creative breakthrough; it's simply an LP absent of any filler.

A Late written review...

by Coloursound

This is a review I have been meaning to write for many, many years. It's just a hard one for me to get straight.

First, I am a 33 year old Musician / Artist / Songwriter / Photographer.
I got the Cutting Crew - Broadcast as a birthday gift on my 10th birthday. My mother and I were at the mall and she let me get 2 cassettes - I believe the other cassette was Psuedo Echo.

I am a listener and musician who enjoys timeless music. I usually listen to artists such as U2, Sigur Ros, George Benson, Eric Johnson, Kiln, Ken Ishii, Pat Metheny, The Strokes, Takagi Masakatsu, Ulrich Schnauss, Radiohead, Interpol, etc.

I have a top ten favorite records of ALL time and 'Broadcast' falls in the top 5.
I know what it is like to write a set of songs and forget where the magic went.

I truly wish that Nick could find the magic again that was in this record. Unfortunately, Kevin is gone and he put so much wonderful sugar on top of the cake - That ingredient can never be gotten back.
But Nick's songwriting was incredible at this point. I also understand that when you sell 3 million records, writing for your follow up record is a different mindset than the first, pre-success. Sometimes it can be a mess, because what made you great in the beginning was the struggle itself.

Ever since I was 10, I was smart enough to realize that this record had so much better to offer than a four and a half minute overrated hit song. In fact, I always skipped number 6 (or on cassette, fast forward 1st song on side B)

All other 9 songs are so amazing.

Guitar - Kevin had so many incredible Riffs / solos / leads, etc. He didn't buy into the visual gimmicks of fast guitar playing (like The Edge). but instead opted for pretty melodies and timeless tones. I love his 'Mockingbird' tone - always reminded me of a small radio speaker.

Bass - This is a wealth of fretless, underwater sounding bass. I lived in a house with an inground pool, and everytime I hear the bass on this record, I picture my old pool, the night look with the underwater lamp creating awesome shadows.
The Bass lines are also very well written, I would love to have a bass player like this in my band.

Vocals - Nick found special melodies and his phrasing was great. Lyrics flowed where they were placed, as if they were put there by fate. This is how I try to write. This element started to dissapear in later Cutting Crew releases. Some melodies stand up with Bono's timeless lines (not to be confused with lyrics).

Drums - Natural and electronic sounds, but very energetic and they really drive the songs, like in Fear of Falling.
I always loved the part before the chorus where it has that "Ready?....Here we go.....Here we go!!!" feeling. Then the chorus rocks!

Keyboard sounds are tasteful and timeless as well.

This record has an 80's sound, no dounbt about it. It is not oversaturated though, like something by ABC, Pseudo Echo, etc.
I wish Nick could find this special chemistry in his writing and singing again, but he would have to put himself where he was over 20 years ago.
And besides, as an artist, I know how we just want to grow and change constantly so that will NEVER happen.

I have a hard time putting this review into words.
I'll sum it up with this. It has a Nostalgia: A sentimental value for me but that is NOT the only thing that keeps it alive for me. It has so much more to offer than memories. It stands on it's own as incredible.
Just please give it a chance - Ignore number 6 for a while and see how the other 9 songs are so much better.

I wish my review could be more useful!

David Cook "rocks" this cover that he is doing on his tour

I never heard this song before until I saw David Cook do this live. David Cook puts his own signature "spin" on this song and Knocks it out of the park and leaves his fans begging for more. What a great song, thanks Cutting Crew

I spent quite a bit driving from Long Beach to Hollywood with this album playing. Not earth-shattering but very good music throughout.
