iTunes Review

This former SKB member brings an identifiably East Coast sensibility to his use of Americana themes and motifs. In these tracks, Bickhardt’s smoky tenor and fluent fingerpicking bring the early work of Gordon Lightfoot and Tom Rush to mind, lightened by welcome flashes of humor. The homespun elegance of his playing matches the lyric vividness within tunes like “Life With the Sound Turned Down,” “Where In the World,” and the title track. The pleasures and demands of family life are reoccurring themes here, with the wry “Donald and June” and the tender “Carrying a Dream” standing out. The genial mood of “The Real Game” and “A Day Well Spent” contrasts with the roots-rock bite of “If He Came Back Again” and the nostalgic balladry of “This Old House.” Bickhardt’s backup combo includes such notables as bassist Byron House and fiddler Andy Leftwich, and Janis Ian, Tim O’Brien and Beth Nielsen Chapman lend vocal support on various tracks. Brother to the Wind has the resonance of classic folk-pop, delivered with the easy touch of a master.

Left-Handed Compliments

I read the review of Brother to the Wind and can't figure out why the reviewer didn't come right out and say "I don't like it." Apparently writing good songs that deal with familiar themes is anathema these days? Whatever. Craig Bickhardt is a recent discovery for me, and a welcome one. I like his music, and I'm not typically a fan of most "country music". This is gentle, thoughtful music - well written, carefully arranged, recorded and produced. Not the typical slick, cliche tunes that come and go on the charts all the time. These are song from, and for, the heart. If you're a country fan, or a fan of country music that leans toward singer-songwriter or folk, I encourage you to give your own ears a chance to decide if they like Brother to the Wind - mine sure do.

Like a friend

Craig, I got turned on to you from Thom Schuyler's website. On your website I read your entire songwriter's journal, jotting down quotes that I'll be able to refer to in the future. And after reading this, I felt like I knew you as a friend. Only now I am I starting to listen to your songs. I'm starting with this cd and I love it. Thanks for the songs, and thanks for putting that journal online. It's a valuable resource for beginning writers.

Wonderful songs!

This is a great album! I saw Craig at a house concert last year and bought this CD. I just love it! With his warm, soothing voice and catchy lyrics and melodies, you can't
help singing along to these songs. I am not really a fan of country music but this is really more like folk or singer/songwriter music. The production is somewhat country, but
this music could appeal to anyone who likes GOOD music! Favorite tracks for me are: "This Old House", "If He Came Back", "The Real Game", "Donald and June", "Life With The Sound Turned Down". Really, they're all great songs - no need to skip any tracks!

Biography

Born: Pennsylvania

Genre: Country

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Country singer/songwriter/guitarist Craig Bickhardt was born in Pennsylvania and got his big break when he wrote and sang two songs on the soundtrack to the 1983 film Tender Mercies. That prompted a move to Nashville, where he began playing sessions (starting with background vocals on Reba McEntire's 1984 album My Kind of Country) and pitching his songs. As is usual in Nashville, most of those songs were collaborations with other writers. "That's How You Know When Love's Right," written with Wendy...
