iTunes Review

Composer Thomas Newman has written music for dozens of movies since the ‘80s, and has received numerous Academy Award nominations for his work on projects such as Little Women, The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, Finding Nemo, and Wall-E. In 2009 Newman scored the Jim Sheridan-directed drama, Brothers, which was based on the Danish film Brødre, directed by Susanne Bier. The film’s soundtrack clocks in at a brief 25 minutes, utilizing guitar as its main instrument. The opener, “Homecoming,” features a melancholy theme played by electric guitar accompanied by bells and electronic effects. “The Pipe”— the title refers to a key weapon in the movie — is a dark ambient piece that brims with mystery. Its heaviness is quickly dissolved by the next cut, “Snowman,” a cue featuring jaunty rhythm guitar and pleasant filigrees. The closer, “What Happened?,” is an expanded re-statement of the opening theme. It’s the longest track here and the most satisfying one as well.

winter

how come u2 winter is not on this soundtrack?

A bit thin

This is an occasionally interesting listen from the great Thomas Newman but there are a lot of tracks that sound very similar and there just isn't that much material here. Its not really Newman's fault as there doesn't seem to be much score in the film and this score is only 25 minutes. For his great works check out American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Shawshank Redemption.

Not my favorite Newman score

Thomas Newman usually can do no wrong in my eyes, but this score is not one of my favorites. I think the music fit the film well, but it is not overly exciting on its own. I personally prefer soundtracks that are interesting to listen to apart from their "underscore" purpose. I hope Newman comes out with another lush score soon. Until then, I'm listening to my new favorite, "Beginnings" by Josh Kramer.
