iTunes Review

Hugely influential though never superstars themselves, Massachusetts rockers Sebadoh were one of the most crucial bands of the post-punk/alternative/lo-fi/indie/emo landscape. Bubble and Scrape is their final album with founding member (and musical wildcard) Eric Gaffney, whose explosive improvisations were the perfect counterpoint to Lou Barlow's perpetually pouting lyricism. Jason Lowenstein, who joined the ranks on III also comes into his own here, contributing some of his best work to date with jams like "Sister," "Sixteen," and the chaotic "Flood." Lou's trademark sensitive musings are in fine form, especially on the weepy single "Soul and Fire," while Eric's spaz-happy outbursts are especially impressive on tracks like "Emma Get Wild" and the harmonica-laced freakout "Fantastic Disaster." Though various incarnations of the group would continue to record throughout the rest of the nineties, this is really their last great album, and it's held up extremely well over the years; Domino reissued it in 2008 to coincide with a European reunion tour and All Tomorrows Parties gigs.

???

This is one of my favorite albums ever, and when I heard it was going to be released with bonus tracks I got really excited. But where are they on this version? 5 stars for Sebadoh, 1 star for itunes.

A Solid Sebadoh release...15 years ago.

This is a great Sebadoh album, and a great Alternative album. The reviewer who says that Sebadoh "isn't alternative" was probably in diapers when this album was released - though I don't think that's an excuse for ignorance. Sebadoh is one of the fathers of the current Indie and Alternative music scene. Saying they aren't "alternative" is like saying Led Zepplin isn't Metal because you're used to listening to Avenged Sevenfold. This albums is great for what it is - a history lesson of sorts, and great rock from the early 90's.

Great Album, But Nothing New Here

Bubble & Scrape is a great Sebadoh album, but it certainly isn't new. iTunes acts as if the disc was just released, but it came out in 1993. If you are looking for new Lou Barlow music, check out the latest from Dinosaur Jr. instead.

Biography

Formed: 1989 in Amherst, MA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

As much a collective of musicians as a band, Sebadoh was the quintessential lo-fi band of the '90s. Formed by singer/songwriter Lou Barlow while he was the bassist for Dinosaur Jr. in the late '80s, Sebadoh's music was a virtual catalog of '80s alternative rock and '90s indie rock, featuring everything from jangle pop to noise rock experimentalism. Upon being kicked out of Dinosaur in 1989, Barlow turned his attention toward Sebadoh, a home-recording project that he and drummer/songwriter Eric Gaffney...
