iTunes Review

Buck Owens’ appearance on Austin City Limits in October 1988 was something of a homecoming for the Bakersfield giant, and Live Form Austin, TX shows that he had lost none of his vim in the intervening years. “Act Naturally” is loose and lively, and reminds the listener that Owens’ naturalistic approach to country music is not a relic, but a vital philosophy. Many of the longtime members of the Buckaroos are onboard to summon the classic Bakersfield sound. In addition to the band’s snappy, swinging rhythms, it is a true joy to witness the revitalization of the inimitable two-part harmonies in “Crying Time” and “Tiger By the Tail,” provided here by Owens and longtime bassist Doyle Curtsinger. Yoakam appears alongside Buck for the sterling “Under Your Spell Again,” proving again that he is not only Buck’s benefactor, but his brightest student. Renditions of Chuck Berry’s “Memphis” and “Johnny B. Goode” affirm Owens’ affinity for rock ‘n’ roll, but there is no substitute for weeping pedal steel of “Together Again.” Played by Terry Christofferson, the sound is a crystalline representation of San Joaquin loneliness.

That boy can sing!

Ive been a Buck fan since I was "made" to listen him in the 60s. Few can capture a country song as well. This live version of some of his greatest hits proves that talent lives within regardless of the time away from the industry. Buck will be missed

Awsome!

Been contemplating purchasing this album for a few days and I broke down and bought it! Buck Owens is superb at this Austin City Limits concert.. Buck has solid energy and great enthuism opening up for Dwight Yoakum! I decided to purchase this live album because the other 21 hit release didn't have Crying Time and I'm grateful I did because Buck sounds great performing live. My only regret is that I wished I had the opportunity to have seen Buck Owens perform live in concert. Believe me, this album is the next best thing! Long live the Bakersfield sound!

More talent in 30 minutes than most artists show in a lifetime

While in today's world Buck Owens doesn't sound all that radical, this 1988 live performance shows the fire and spark that gave us the Bakersfield Sound never died in that cornfield of Hee-Haw. I'm sure that Dwight Yoakam got the irony in having Buck Owns open for him if nobody else did. Why did it take 19 years to give us this great performance? As always, Buck was having a good time. You can hear it between the songs and in the way he gives it all he has on every song--some that he'd been playing for almost 30 years at this point. If you're a Buckaroo, you gotta get it.

Genre: Country

Years Active: '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s

Buck Owens, along with Merle Haggard, was the leader of the Bakersfield sound, a twangy, electricified, rock-influenced interpretation of hardcore honky tonk that emerged in the '60s. Owens was the first bona fide country star to emerge from Bakersfield, scoring a total of 15 consecutive number one hits in the mid-'60s. In the process, he provided an edgy alternative to the string-laden country-pop that was being produced during the '60s. Later in his career, his musical impact was forgotten by some...
