Album Review

Building Nothing Out of Something collects Modest Mouse singles and rare tracks from the group's indie-label years, including the studio tracks from the Interstate 8 EP and their contributions to the Sub Pop Singles Club. Despite the songs' motley origins, Building Nothing Out of Something works well as an album, balancing the group's quirky and often poignant pop songs with their more abrasive rock side. The wonderfully dreamy, off-kilter "Interstate 8" and "Workin' on Leavin' the Livin'" (which cleverly quotes Eraserhead's "Lady in the Radiator Song") are two shining examples of the group's elastic, loopy guitar pop, while "All Nite Diner," "A Life of Arctic Sounds," and "Other People's Lives" define their high-strung rock sound. Slower songs like "Grey Ice Water" and the Santo & Johnny homage "Sleepwalkin'" round out this look at Modest Mouse's diverse but consistently worthwhile indie output.

As a pianist, I noticed while writing arrangements for the songs on this album that they mix major triads with relative minor triads and play them at the same time. One would expect a clashing, harsh sound, but the result actually seems to create a very relaxing tone throughout the album. Also, literary-wise, the lyrics are brillant. Modest Mouse always is, but this album is just the epitome of brillance. I go through every day of my life trying to fathom how absolutely brillant the lyrics in this album are. Amazing. The band is a big fan of paradox, which can be seen in their album titles like "good news for people who love bad news", "the lonesome crowded west" and "building something out of nothing". Also, they seem really into car imagry and traveling allusions, especially in "this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about". I LOVE the song "Other People's Lives". It is amazing...all of them are. I aint no sales person, but this album should be everyone's priority in life.

you know this might be the best?

i've bought all of the modest mose ablums and yet im not sure if any compare to this. Everyone says that it is the lonesome crowded west but this album has the ability to take me some where else with tracks like sleepwalkin and life of artic sounds. And i think that it starts to rain in my mind every time i listen. Some cool Sh*t!

The Best of the Best

This is the band's best album. Modest Mouse puts tons of good and win into this CD, where each song sounds different and can be appreciated seperately or listen to it together and hear the songs mesh beautifully. It contains clever, witty, and down-right thought provoking lyrics that I've memorized by heart. Get this CD if you love indie or just plain good music.
