iTunes Review

If Matt Nathanson were older and just a little more Irish, “Car Crash” could be mistaken for a lost U2 song. Of course he doesn’t sound like Bono on the rest of Some Mad Hope. “Come On Get Higher” is just as hitworthy, but with its romantic mid-tempo vibe, amorously fawning lyrics, and Nathanson’s beautifully textured voice that breaks in all the right spots — this song harks back to his coffeehouse roots. Nathanson’s sixth studio album isn’t a huge departure from his prior works, but there is definitely more thought put into the arrangements and lyrics of songs like the danceable “To the Beat Of Our Noisy Hearts” with its breathy verses before the driving choruses unfold to expose a hailstorm of hooks. The stripped down, melancholic elegance of “Bulletproof Weeks” shows real maturity in songwriting, especially in the lyrics, which search for a more poetic and sublime choice of words making for something that vaguely recalls Ryan Adams’ better moments. His true voice comes out in “Falling Apart,” a moving power ballad sung in a comfortable key that doesn’t sound like anyone but Matt Nathanson.

AMAZING.

Matt Nathanson is probably one of the most unique songwriters today. The description does no justice to his name AT ALL, so those who read it know that its completely false. His songs are original and apparently, since 'Come On Get Higher' has become extremely popular, that means he HAS attracted new fans. So to those reading the description, don't listen to it. Check out Matt Nathanson and you will not be disappointed.

Genuinely Radiant

This album is my absolute prized possession. I love how Nathanson uses sensory imagery in his songs to allow the audience to connect; for example: "I miss the pull of your heart, I taste the sparks on your tongue"... Although my favorite line is probably, "and every day's a start to something beautiful." He uses his words to captivate, rather than hiding behind the rhythms and heavy bass, like so many current artists find easier to do. This is probably what solidifies him as a genuine talent.
Oh, and to the reviewer who said that Nathanson was a fake and took "Come on Get Higher" from Sugarland; you should go to the Sugarland album that "Come on Get Higher" is on, go to song info, and then look at the composer's name... It's Matt Nathanson.
I told you, he's genuine.

Amazing.

I really think Matt Nathanson is going to be move up to one of the top singers/songwriters out there. I saw him live last night and he almost sounds better live than on his record. That says something... he has real music and he is not computerized at all like most nowaday "top 100" artists. He is really funny and writes amazing music. I can't give him enough praise.

Biography

Born: 1973 in Boston, MA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

An impressive 12-string guitar player and songwriter, San Francisco's Matt Nathanson has built up a loyal fan base through extensive touring. His live shows are stripped-down affairs, usually with just Nathanson and cellist Matt Fish on-stage, and are half music, half standup comedy, with the humor balancing out the frequently despondent introspection of the songs. Nathanson has released four independent albums, Please (1993), Ernst (1997), Not Colored Too Perfect (1998), and Still Waiting for Spring...
