iTunes Review
With their sixth studio album, Reckless Kelly's Bulletproof unleashes crunchy, twangy, Americana rock 'n' roll that sounds even more dangerously cool than the album art looks. (And in case you didn't know, that's their namesake, Australian outlaw Ned Kelly, depicted on the cover.) The opening song "Ragged As The Road" rocks it outlaw style, like an amplified David Allan Coe crossed with a '70s Rolling Stones swagger (whose Mick Jagger portrayed Ned Kelly in the 1970 film about the infamous bushranger). Both "Love In Her Eyes" and "American Blood" sound somewhat influenced by Steve Earle, and not just because both parties pull big Texan twang-rock tones. The former tune is as catchy and punchy as anything on Earle's Guitar Town and the latter uses grungy, Crazy Horse sounding guitars and a fist pumping melody to rail against the U.S. occupation of Iraq. And the guitars on the title track are so saturated with dark sounding vintage distortion that it wouldn't be at all surprising if both Crazy Horse and Drive-By Truckers were somehow involved.

Fantastic
Much better than their previous studio effort, Wicked Twisted Road, Bulletproof is a varied effort that satisfies the part of me that longs for substance and the part of me that just wants to sing along. There are rambling rockers (Ragged as the Road) and lighter-raising ballads (Never Had a Chance). The lyrics are at times a little lackluster, but the melodies more than make up for any deficiencies. Some of these songs are among the most catchy and addictive I've heard in years.... the kind that make you wake up with it playing in your head. There's some depth here too. As a generally conservative-leaning guy, I was leary of the anti-war "American Blood" but it's a thoughtful, though jarring, piece that doesn't rely on hyperbole but gets it's message across in an honest way. "God Forsaken Town" is another well-written piece, a tale of Hurricane Katrina and its after-effects. As deep as those two songs go, this is mostly a love and lack-of love affair, and Bulletproof really doesn't weigh you down after repeated listenings - in fact, you may not be able to get enough. All in all, this may be Reckless Kelly's best album. Best tracks: Ragged as the Road, Mirage
Outstanding!!!
This is the best CD these guys have came out with. Every song is a hit. These guys always impress me. Every time they come to the DFW I'm there. Just put it in and sit back and listen. Great job Reckless...keep up the great work!!!
Best RK Yet
This album takes the best element of all the other RK albums out there and rolls it into one AWESOME package. You get the rockers that are capture their energy from their live albums (Ragged as the Road, A Guy Like Me), the ballads (Never Had a Chance)...but then you get what makes RK a truly great band- the story telling aspect of their music that made their prior albums such a fun listen, in the style of Seven Nights in Eire, Wicked Twisted Road, Mersey Beat. American Blood and God Forsaken Town put you in the shoes (boots?) of a character and you get a story rather than just a song. This album has a lot of spirit...a little less folky than Wicked Twisted Road, but absolute proof that this band is going to continue to evolve and bring in a new and different fan base with every album. Top notch. If you could roll Austin, TX and NYC's Lower East Side together, you'd get this album. Can't wait to see them in NYC in July! Current favorite tracks (I think it changes with every listen, I find something new to love): One False Move, How Was California?, Bulletproof
