iTunes Review
Released four years after 2005’s Healthy In Paranoid Times, Our Lady Peace’s seventh studio album was produced by the band’s singer Raine Maida. Maida has been busy co-writing songs with American Idol’s seventh season winner David Cook, who championed O.L.P. as his biggest influence. The collaboration with Cook also may be why Burn Burn sounds more accessible than any of O.L.P.'s prior works. But though Burn Burn may sound sleeker, the songs are well crafted and show a maturity in content and arrangement. The opening hit “All You Did Was Save My Life” instantly propels O.L.P. into the intelligent arena-rock stratosphere with the likes of U2, Coldplay and Kings Of Leon. “Monkey Brains” is another standout track, bouncing and lulling with the pomp and romance of a Britpop band, not unlike the reunited Verve. “Paper Moon” closes the album — a power ballad that plays with the triumphant feel of a cinematic climax. Bonus tracks include the driving “Time Bomb” and “The Right Stuff,” a winding tune that’s as danceable as it is catchy.

Like a Knife to My Soul..
I had high hopes for this album. The band claimed to have sort of "refound" themselves in their artistry and music.. but all I can think of is how dull and how distant it seems from what they could be. Their musical format mimics commercial repetitive chords, and puts too much emphasis on the vocals and not enough on the band. I'm sorry, but this album was a huge let down for me. I've been listening to it on AOL's free listening party all today, and I can honestly say that I will not buy this album. Sorry guys.
This is an OLP album?
Downloaded it this morning and have already listened to the album twice through to get familar with it before they perform in NYC tonight. Highlights are "Paper Moon", "Monkey Brains", and the single "All You Did Was Save My Life". The bonus tracks are also great. As for a review.....I remember their earlier albums where each song had a unique sound (guitars were fresh, Raine changed it up), and the rhythms would spin you around fast, then slow down and cradle you, then spin you around again. After "Gravity", that seemed to stop. They seemed to want to become U2 (and don't get me wrong, U2 is another favorite band of mine, but it's simply not what OLP built their name on). "Healthy In Paranoid Times" felt like it was hanging on by a thread (or should I say, "hanging from a wire") Now, I feel that only the first three tracks and the last two tracks on "Burn Burn" stand out as unique. The whole middle of the SHORT album (meaning tracks 4-8) feel so similar, so bland, so lacking that OLP passion. For all the time this band supposedly spends crafting an album, I would have expected more. And why are the "bonus tracks" so fantastic? Am I supposed to count that toward "Burn Burn" as an album, or not? Does the band truly feel the tracks that made the album are superior to these bonus tracks? I just don't understand the thinking here. Hopefully the live show tonight can show me something about these songs that the album does not. It gets three stars because it's Our Lady Peace, but as far as any other album goes, I think I'm being too generous...
Not "Happiness..." anymore, but that's not a bad thing.
It seems like many people are angry because this isn't 'happiness...' or older stuff. All I can say is you can't blame the band for going in their own direction..don't listen to it thinking "this had better be like older OLP" just listen to it. You can gripe that they sound more mainstream, but Raine produced this album, so they probably went the way they felt like going. I think it sounds great and I'm glad the band isn't trying to produce what they don't feel. Give it an open chance without a predisposition against it because it sounds different.. you may enjoy it, I sure did.
