Album Review

Blake Morgan's Engine Company Records enables the producer to explore the different dimensions of his own music while working with the other artists on his roster. A good case in point is Lesley Gore's subdued interpretation of Morgan's eerie need for a more efficient celestial being to help him through the trials of life. "Still hoping better angels come to me," he sings in "Better Angels," the tune finding a more comfortable setting on Gore's Ever Since disc. With his own rendition Blake seems like he is fighting the demons rather than trading up. The producer as singer/songwriter is more effective when he belts it out, as on "Right as Rain," his gruff vocal style better suited to that tune and fearful episodes like "Danger to Wake You." "All Your Fault" moves like the Nervous Eaters classic on Elektra Records, "Last Chance," or the Smashing Pumpkins' "1979" before it explodes into its Led Zeppelin-gone-modern rock riff. Jangly George Harrison-influenced guitars and Beatles ideas find their way into "She's Coming Down" (perhaps the up-tempo sequel to Paul McCartney's "She's Leaving Home"?), while "Only Anesthesia" and "Silver Linings" deliver the angst with the singer's for-the-moment philosophy. It's something that is reinforced on "Safe Beats Sorry out Again," combining the admonishments with elegant guitar lines that rock out when least expected. Burning Daylight features 11 originals that sing out in productive fashion, strong material that is ripe for reinterpretation.

Love this guy

Heard "Maybe I'm Amazed " on Adam Curry's DSC and was blown away. Based on that, I bought the whole album.

The kind of music we need more of

Downloading one of these songs on its own gives you an idea of what Blake Morgan is capable of - the chunky riffs, the textured sound, the BIG voice - but it takes listening to the whole album to get a true appreciation of what he can do. I'm totally blown away by this collection, it covers an incredible range of sounds and has so much to say. A lot of Beatles comparisons are being made, and they're fair; the influence and kinship are undeniable. Morgan places himself among the accomplished musical family with a direct lineage to that most important of bands, and echoes of other artists in that tree (Tears for Fears, Nirvana) can be found on Burning Daylight as well. Don't get me wrong, this is thoroughly contemporary, unique work which stands as its own, largely distininguished by the best of Morgan's many instruments, his tremendous voice, which runs the gamut from blowtorch scathing to compassionate consoling (sometimes within the space of one song). His singing is matched by the musicians he's surrounded himself, who cover everything from churning rockers to thoughtful reveries with almost frightening ease. This band can play (Jonathan Ellinghaus will remind you of what drumming should sound like), and Morgan ably utilizes their talents to help bring his tunes to life, adding shape and color to his dynamic songs. Just as important to me as the music however, is the message it contains/communicates. Morgan's lyrics are both straightforward and conflicted, accusing and self-critical, full of confidence and doubt. In other words, he's a lot like us, and you'll feel the universality of his words as he attempts to reconcile the conflict between expectation and disappointment, between coping with someone else's demons and choking down your own, between having to convince everyone you're right and not being sure yourself. But don't listen to me, listen to the songs. Put "Only Anesthesia" on your ipod workout playlist and feel it drive you to new heights/weights. Play "Danger to Wake You" in the morning and attempt not to hum the chorus for the rest of the day. Listen to "Better Angels" at the end of a bad night and know that you're not alone. Toss on "Right as Rain" after your next breakup and revel in your anger. Take a walk with "Sick for You" playing on a rainy fall afternoon and think of someone you miss. Listen to the songs. Get the album. You won't regret it.

Maybe I'm Amazed? I'm TOTALLY Amazed!!!

Heard this on Adam Curry's Daily Source Code...it killed me! McCartney covers never make the grade, but Blake blew the doors off on his version. What a voice. I bought the whole record...can't wait. THANK YOU!

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Maverick recording artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Blake Morgan's studio chops, smart lyrics, and gift for the melodic twist have earned him a loyal critical and commercial following. After signing a seven-record deal in 1997 with Phil Ramone's N2K (Sony/RED) label, resulting in the well-received Anger's Candy, Morgan became disillusioned with the rigid, corporate side of rock & roll. After a successful tour that found him sharing stages with the likes of Joan Jett and Matchbox Twenty,...
