Album Review
Sure, a country song about the singer's mother is a long and honored tradition in the style, one as old as the Carter Family's early material. Still, it's not every country singer whose maternal tribute features the chorus "She didn't like me too well/My mama was a devil outta hell." But the opening track to David Childers' Burning in Hell is a fine introduction to this idiosyncratic country singer/songwriter. Featuring a pleasantly gruff singing voice that at times sounds shockingly like the actor John Goodman, and a warped lyrical sense that introduces poisonous chemical spills that stain people "with a sulfurous hue" into an otherwise pastoral, lovely acoustic tune like "In the Early Morning," Childers is North Carolina's answer to the similarly quirky west Texas singer/songwriter Terry Allen. Where Allen's day job as an acclaimed painter and sculptor gives his music a slightly artsy and philosophical bent, Childers is a practicing lawyer, and his often scabrous, occasionally ranting lyrics have the complete lack of sentimentality and barely-hidden rage of Flannery O'Connor. His newfound backing trio the Modern Don Juans, featuring his son Robert Childers on drums, is younger and hungrier than the middle-aged singer/songwriter, giving these 14 songs a punky immediacy that perfectly fits the dripping sarcasm and unvarnished imagery of Childers' lyrics. This is country music that would scare the average Faith Hill fan half to death.

DC Delivers ANOTHER great album
I discovered David Childers music by accident at an acoustic cafe in Cary, NC about 6 years ago....he is truly one music's finest songwriters and his recent albums with the Don Juans have only made his songs more powerful with his band. What sets DC apart is his live show and the passion and intensity he brings to each show, whether it's solo acoustic or blowing the roof off the local bar.....Burning in Hell - this is a great record with great production....
Wish I Had Found It Sooner
This album is incredible. I just wish I had found out about these guys sooner. It's so incredibly eclectic that you can put it in and satisfy any mood you happen to be in that day. The first time I actually heard of David Childers and the Modern Don Juans was when they opened for The Gourds. As good as the album is, the live show is even better. When they got done with their opening set everyone went nuts. That was the first time I had heard an opening band receive encore applause like that. Awesome show.
DC&The MDJ's Do it Again
David Childers is an incredible singer/songwriter. You do not find this type of authenticity in Americana or dare I say it...alternative country today. DC & the MDJ's are indeed incredble at live shows, and the spirit and energy of those shows are captured on each of his records. I am sad to see him take time off, he is the real thing. I have given many of this record and Room 23 to people I care deeply for all over the world...people with souls..and they, like me, enjoy this music in the light and dark of life.
