Album Review
After being put through the major-label ringer with the quirky pop/rock outfit Trip Shakespeare and his subsequent moonlighting in various Twin Cities bands as a drummer, Matt Wilson marked his return to the music world as a singer/songwriter with Burnt, White and Blue. The clever and occasionally ridiculous lyrics and arrangements that were the hallmarks of Trip Shakespeare songs were retired with the band, and as this album makes clear, Wilson has refined a more sophisticated but no less exciting sound. From the gorgeous guitar and revitalizing chorus of the opening track "Sun Is Coming," to the wistful acoustic answering machine ballad that closes the album ("Hello Caller"), Burnt, White and Blue is wonderfully written and performed –- an engendering and gratifying listen from start to finish.

Minneapolis Rock Savant
Brother of famed Semisonic lead man Dan Wilson and former member of the popular local Minneapolis band Trip Shakespear, Matt's first and only self titled album is a masterpiece all its own. Matt combines catchy riffs and singable rhyming quips which most undoubtably will leave you bellowing along with this album while driving around town. He may have never reached the pinnacle of success his brother has, but be assured that this album rocks.
More depth, better tasting
This album is a departure from Matt's work with Trip, and it proably failed to bring along many of those fans. It's a darker album, delving into the broken places of life and looking for an out to hope. The album is about deeply personal struggle and yet still has some of the wit, fun and lots of the catchiness that he's known for. This was one of my favorite albums of the year. It's overlooked, but worth a good listen.
Great album
I love this album. Matt doesn't get as much attention from the press as his brother Dan; however, Matt is equally talented.
