Album Review
The artwork's liable to convert any room in which it is viewed into a makeshift vomitorium, and the music — from a Glaswegian producer possibly named after connected New York rivers, albeit with a vowel thrown in for Google-proofing — is absolutely "acquired taste" territory. Sometimes needlessly complex and, at its worst, goofy for the sake of being goofy — proper boots-in-a-dryer bizniz with shrill flotsam swirling about — these tracks can be as off-putting as they are exhilarating. A fearless scrap heap mutation that incorporates icebox IDM crunch, DayGlo synthesizer funk and, most notably, late-'80s/early-'90s R&B flourishes — exemplified by "Just Decided"'s synthetic horns and "Twistclip Loop"'s keyboard sprites — the album is nonetheless deeply affecting in stretches. Its best sequence, near the end, begins with "Tell Me What You Want from Me," where Art of Noise-level grandeur combines with a taut titanium-strength beat worthy of Swizz Beats, tailor-made for its open-hearted Dâm-Funk vocal. "FUSE" follows, bearing a disarmingly uplifting synthesizer patterns of drawn-out notes over rattling percussion and a strangely enhancing wordless vocal sample. "Star Crackout"'s spectral opera is the come down, which melts into "Allhot," where blunt kick drums and chintzy snares are an unlikely match for female vocalist Nadsroic's sighing advances. The album's first half isn't short on moving moments, either. It's highlighted by "Joy Fantastic" — nothing if not a modern funk slammer, quite possibly potent enough to turn André 3000 and Cee-Lo Green er, well, green.
Customer Reviews
Very dissapointing
Being a fan of Warp Records and everything put out by the LuckyMe collective, I've gotten used to being suprised and impressed by what is put out and by the creativity of both labels. However, this album is so utterly dissapointing and below the level of quality one can expect that it just cannot be ignored. Mohawke's genius shines through on the Polyfolk EP, the Ooops! bootlegs, his other singles and the many mixtapes, but the work on this album feels extremely rushed, as if Warp pressured him to produce a quick album to cash in with little to no regard as to the quality, and was thrown together over a weekend. I would never play this to someone who was interested in learning more about HudMo - PolyFolk or his mixtapes would do a much better job.
Different, but solid nonetheless.
If you're like me, and checked back here every couple of weeks for a new release from Mohawke because of his first release, Polyfolk Dance, then I think we'd both agree that this album does not disappoint.
The beats and synths do sound a different in that they don't have the same forward driving momentum as say 'Overnight,' however, these tracks sound more cloudy and dreamy, which is definitely a plus in my opinion. It's great to see artists not staying within their confines, and it's even more satisfying when an artist succeeds in doing something a little different.
Ridiculous Flavor
Hudmo is the future of hiphop! period. if you cop this album, it will be in your speakerbox for awhile. Hudson is the main man who explores all the facets of hiphop beat producing while not succumbing to the repetitive beat that is consistent in mainstream hiphop productions. with funky electronic hues embedded in his style, this album will make you want more. also check out mike slott, heralds of change, and oddisee.
