iTunes Review

As moody and murky as Minks’ debut album is overall, the Brooklyn-based duo isn’t this week’s Joy Division. More like a couple of Cure fans with an appreciation for the thin line between darkness and light. So while a single like “Funeral Song” may be about summer’s last gasps, frontman Sean Kilfoyle sounds like he’s dancing on the ashes of our discontent. Shadows lurk around the corners of “Ophelia” as well, but they’re basked in brilliant synth bursts and manic melodies at every turn. And then there’s “Cemetary Rain,” a partly cloudy pop song that could slip in between the Smiths, New Order and Echo & The Bunnymen on the Pretty In Pink soundtrack without anyone noticing. Like a long walk in the middle of the night, this is music that wipes your mind clean, creeping into every crevice like a bank of gauzy, long-forgotten memories.

why is this even out yet

I thought captured tracks was supposed to release this on jan 12 2011, besides that I am a bit disappointed with the new album. I loved the two eps but i feel like they've taken a change in direction. I love songs like Funeral Song, Ophelia, and drunk punks, and on the new album i was expected some more energetic songs but the only energetic songs where the old ones with the exception of kusmi. A lot of the songs are really mellow which isn't necessarily bad such songs like cemetery rain are really good however some of the songs are really boring. I still have hope for minks and maybe their next ep or lp they will change their musical direction back to how it used to be.

Minks LP fails to sustain much interest

Like other listeners, I was attracted to Minks by the appeal of their pre-By the Hedge singles, particularly "Funeral Song." It's unfortunate that so irresistible a song now sits in the middle of a generally lazy and forgettable album. I do hope "Funeral Song" wasn't a fluke and Minks manage to recapture that spontaneity on future releases, and I highly recommend buying that song. The rest of the album seems content to inhabit the background in a confused haze of pat nostalgia. Too bad!

Lol

Release on Jan 12 2011?!?!? Lol weird

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Shaun Kilfoyle and Amalie Bruun comprise the duo Minks, whose moody take on indie pop initially drew comparisons to the Cure, New Order, and My Bloody Valentine. Little was known about the group until the April 2010 release of their first single, Funeral Song, by Captured Tracks, also home to the like-minded Wild Nothing. That summer, the band returned with the single Ophelia, which revealed a softer side to Minks' music. Live shows (for which the band expanded to a six-piece) with Veronica...
