iTunes Review

Gov’t Mule remains the heaviest power trio on the jam-band circuit. Think Cream with an extra dose of sludge. 2009’s By a Thread was written and recorded in the studio with new bassist Jorgen Carlsson replacing Andy Hess, and the new chemistry between Carlsson and drummer Matt Abts is fierce. Guest guitarist Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top adds extra Texas dynamite to the opening roar of “Broke Down On the Brazos” that manages to trudge with definite power, yet funk it up with a light, breezy and intense flurry of notes. This elastic firepower enables the Mule to reinvent the blues with a flick of the guitar pick. “Steppin’ Lightly” kicks in with a Black Sabbath-type riff and a funky dance groove with organ that’s pure mastery. “Railroad Boy” is a traditional blues taken up a dexterous notch. The electric workout “Monday Mourning Meltdown” and the acoustic ballad “Forevermore” are emotionally charged vocal performances from Warren Haynes. “Any Open Window” recalls the heyday of Hendrix. Plenty of power and authority throughout.

All For One

Warren Haynes, the busiest musician alive, is always working on something, and the latest from Gov't Mule is a real band effort. There is a lot of music here to digest. I am looking forward to repeated listenings of this cd which I am sure will reveal more and more of the purity of what this band always does. Listen for what Danny Louis (keyboards) and Jorgen Carlsson (bass) sneak into a song without drawing attention to themselves. These guys play their tails off! You cannot listen to "Inside Outside Woman Blues #3" without whipping out the air guitar. I love how effortlessly they can shift gears behind Matt Abts drums on "Scenes From A Troubled Mind." Can't wait to hear these songs live!

Gov't Mule at their finest

This album is beyond good; Hanynes vocals and playing; the fact that he had the good taste to put Billy Gibbons on the first track, the bass lines, Abst's drumming...I hope your speakers can take it. True to his sense of joyous noise, Haynes puts in tradition music as well as his own stellar compositons. Abst's drum licks are the finest in the business, I'll put him up against Bonzo, Moon, Lee, any of the drumming greats; he takes his rightful place with them.
Once again Warren and Stefani produce an album as good as anyone, with sonic qualities only one band can deliver; that band is Gov't mule. If you only own one Mule album, it should be this one.
And it'all been done with the spirit of Woodie ever-present.

STELLAR

This is a truley great listen. Tremendously creative, alot of surprises. In my opinion this is just about as good as it gets, they will never top this, inside out woman guitar licks gave me goose bumps. Great job once again Warren.

The leaders of Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, should be well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock's most famous native sons. In 1989, Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after their debut, the duo joined drummer Matt Abts in the side project...
