iTunes Review

The Black Crowes jump right out of the gate on their fifth release with “Go Faster” and “Kickin’ My Heart Around,” a pair of lean and muscular rockers that practically demand that you turn up the volume. These tunes set the template for the rest of the album, which is dominated by heavy riffs, sharp hooks, and pounding drums. Unlike the past two releases, they don’t offer any true ballads this time, though the soulful, horn-driven “Only a Fool” and the mid-tempo “Welcome to the Goodtimes” come closest. Singer Chris Robinson sounds cocksure as ever, clearly emboldened by the fact that one of the best rock ‘n’ roll bands in the world is backing him up. Ten years into their existence it’s cliché to call the Black Crowes the second coming of the ‘70s-era Rolling Stones or the Faces, especially since they have so clearly honed their own sound, yet the comparison remains accurate. By Your Side may not feature any of their very best individual songs but cut for cut it rocks as righteously as anything since Shake Your Money Maker.

Customer Reviews

New line-up, tighter sound.

Audley Freed and Sven Pipien replace Marc Ford and Johnny Colt. Songs have much more structure, focus, production and drive than "3 Snakes" or "Amorica", plus female back-up vox so in some ways this sounds closer to the 1st or 2nd album. Some great songs though, esp. "Then She Said My Name".

Great CD

This CD is more straight ahead rock. Not as experimental as their other CD's, but it is still great. This was the CD where Rich Robinson played all the guitars. Definately worth adding to your collection.

2nd best

After their debut, this is their 2nd best disc. Forget the jam band hippie stuff, give me good old soul/blues. Buy it.

Biography

Formed: 1984 in Atlanta, GA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

At the time of their 1990 debut, the kind of rock & roll the Black Crowes specialized in was sorely out of style. Only Guns N' Roses came close to approximating a vintage Stones-style raunch, but they were too angry and jagged to pull it off completely. The Black Crowes, on the other hand, replicated that Stonesy swagger and Faces boogie perfectly. Vocalist Chris Robinson appropriated the sound and style of vintage Rod Stewart, while brother Rich Robinson fused Keith Richards' lean guitar attack...
