Full Spectrum
The "C - Ep" is a beautiful collision of truth and struggle. McRoberts has put music and lyrics to the things with which we resonate, but cannot find words for on our own. Each song has its own unique traits, but each points to the common thread of life's experiences: the toil and the beauty, the experiences of being faithful and faithless.
The music on this EP is simple but complex. As with McRoberts' first EP, there's a unique feel to the songs and their complexity. Listening to this EP, you will easily forget that you are not sitting in a small venue with McRoberts just a few feet in front of you. The harmonies on "C" are the kind you have to listen to with your eyes closed: poignant, replete and whole.
McRoberts gives explanations of the origin of his songs on his blog. I encourage you to read them and understand even further the depth of what you're hearing.
An Important EP
Justin McRoberts first step in the CMY(K) opus is a solid offering. As a beginning McRoberts wades to the deep end of the spiritual discussion pool, which has me wondering about what's to follow. The concepts in this music are so crucial for having real conversations that tug and claw at the issues of faith and life that we all experience.
Musically, I secretly think McRoberts grew up in Alabama or somewhere off the banks of the Mississippi. His voice carries a soulful burnish that is undeniable on Ain't No Lying Man. My personal favorites are Reticent (both in concept and musically) and Must Be Hell On You.
CMYK is GREAT
From start to finish, this album is nothing less than brilliant. CMYK does not consist of one single mediocre song. The first song They Don't Mean What They Used To, within just seconds of the song’s intro it is evident that this will not only be a notable song, but that this will also be an impressive album. This is one of those rare albums that can be played over and over again without the album becoming old or seeming worn out. McRoberts has created something very special with this album.
