iTunes Review

Jill Sobule raised $75,000 for the recording, manufacturing and distribution of her 2009 album. “The Donor Song” that finishes the album pays tribute to her fans-turned philanthropists. Elsewhere, Sobule, who once shocked the world with her edgy “I Kissed A Girl” back in 1995, keeps her social critiques up to date without resorting to angry backstabbing. She speaks her mind without flinching. This former New York-based songwriter adapts to the West Coast with that expected sense of ill-ease. She can celebrate the openness (“San Francisco” twists on the old Scott MacKenzie hit) but she remains suspicious of its charms (“Nothing to Prove,” “A Good Life”). “Where Is Bobbie Gentry?” works off that singer’s great hit, “Ode To Billie Joe.” She’s a people person who never stops questioning people’s motivations. More importantly, she’s a songwriter who never forgets to throw an attractive chorus, an alluring verse and some instrumental firepower behind her thoughts. She managed a full-fledged album here. No lo-fi demo for her fans but a multi-hued full-on production that proves resiliency has its charms and self-determinism never goes out of style.

Customer Reviews

Jill is back with some of her best work!

Jill is one of the great songwriters of our generation. Her songs are deceptively simple and catchy. The lyrics are smart, sassy and a little bit dark. If you haven't listened to Jill since "I Kissed a Girl" (yes she came before Kate Perry) then you should check this album out.

A Great Album

A very fine collection of songs. Sobule's writing, always sharp and smart, also deftly treads the barely-there emotional line between the funny and the sad. God knows how she keeps going in an age that prefers Katy Perry, but I'm glad she does.

Yay! Jill's Back!

The patron saint of the under-appreciated and slightly-snarky is back - and i-tunes is a better place because of it.

Singer/songwriter Jill Sobule rose to fame on the strength of her 1995 hit single "I Kissed a Girl," a tongue in cheek nod to the media's fascination with "lesbian chic." Born in Denver, CO in 1961, Sobule grew enamored of rock music at a young age, but did not seriously consider a career as a performer until she spent her junior year of college abroad in Spain. Upon her return to the U.S., she dropped out of school to devote her full energies to music, but her work found little success as she battled...
