iTunes Review
No one better defined Southern Rock in the 1970s than Lynyrd Skynyrd. Spearheaded by singer-songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, a three guitar attack, and a rhythm section that could play a tight, crunchy groove, a foot-stompin’ back porch shuffle or a lazy, wasted vibe without losing their personal identity, Lynyrd Skynyrd had an abundance of weapons at their disposal. But in the end it’s their songs that have enabled their legend to live on. Second Helping is, as its title implies, the group’s second album. It doesn’t stray much from the hard rocking foundation of the debut, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd. Both were produced by Al Kooper, who discovered the group, and feature no nonsense arrangements that ensure tunes such as “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Workin’ For MCA” and J.J. Cale’s “Call Me the Breeze” have a timeless, undated quality. The band could also be counted on for affecting adult tales (“The Ballad of Curtis Lowe,” “The Needle and the Spoon”) that showed Van Zant’s empathy towards his fellow man. Bonus editions of the album feature an essential demo version of Van Zant’s haunting “Was I Right or Wrong,” in case anyone needed further convincing of his extraordinary songwriting talents.

this album broke them into the big time
by davey-boi theriaqueI remember this like yesterday. I was 13 and Lynurd Skynurd was my life! I listened to the wisdom and lived my life like them. I looked up to Ronnie and the boys like they were (they are) my brothers. I drank hard (jack daniels) as hard as a lost 13 year old could. I broke the law, and at the time was proud of it. I dont know how I would have made it with out them. I saw them with johnny winters in spfld ma. (their 1st time in spfld) and the city was readly to rock. I remember exactly where i was when i got the news and after I cried, I smoked a joint in thier honor. I LOVE Lynurd Skynurd and recently got back to the music. thanks
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping
by SwtNCgirlThis has always been my favorite Skynyrd album. I saw them live in May before the plane crash that October in Greensboro, NC and before then and since then I've never seen a better live concert. It's such a tragedy what has happened to the original band from the crash to the death of Allen Collins and to the most recent death of Billy Powell. There is simply no telling how far the original band would have gone. I feel badly for Gary Rossington at times because all of his best friends since high school have gone on without him. I'm sure that is a lonely feeling even though he has many blessings in his life now. This is the BEST Skynyrd album they ever recorded in my opinion. You do not hear this sound now days nor can I think of a band where the gituar players played as well as this group at that stage in their early careers--especially for just a bunch of high school guys who formed a band to see where they could go!! The Lynyrd Skynyrd of the day rocked it like no one else!
