iTunes Review

After enjoying enormous success with 2003’s Fallen, Evanescence underwent an upheaval that led to co-founder Ben Moody’s departure from the band. Taking the creative reins firmly in hand, singer Amy Lee reorganized the group and made The Open Door into a personal tour de force. Unlike the more vaguely defined anguish of the band’s previous album, the songs here are rooted in specific situations and real-life heartbreak. What’s been added is a contemporary immediacy in songs like “Call Me When You're Sober” and “Snow White Queen,” both detailing struggles with obsessive, self-destructive love. Tracks like the Middle Eastern-influenced “Sweet Sacrifice” and the string-laden, slightly cacophonous “Lacrymosa” come from a more exotic place. Sonically, The Open Door frames Lee’s soaring, swooning vocals in dense and distorted textures, achieving a particularly unnerving luster on “Cloud Nine.” Newly-recruited guitarist Terry Balsamo adds both metal-tinged muscle and subtler dabs of sonic color at key moments, and The Open Door manages to reach exalted heights of feeling, beautiful with bruised desire.

I wish

I wish they were still selling The Last Song I'm Wasting On You. It's my favorite Evanescence song!

EVANESCENCE: forEVer the best!

THE OPEN DOOR is the most amazing album I have EVER heard in my lifetime. Perfection in music form. Every time I listen to it, I am left in awe of the band's incredible insight into what true artistry is. Even after three years it doesn't get old...there are so many fascinating elements to the songs. Amy Hartzler has an impeccable voice and creating ability that are heartfelt, moving, strong, unique, and alluring. I really don't think anything can top this but future music from the band. However great Fallen is, this blows it out of the water. And to be honest, the main review on the album page does not give the the music or band members justice. Let the music decide what you feel. I can't wait to watch Ev perform acoustically on Lyrics & Legends on PBS this fall...and there's a new song!

Favorites: ALL. Every single song is incredible. My top 3: Sweet Sacrifice, Your Star, Good Enough. But you're cheating yourself if you don't get the whole album. I would seriously pay $1,000 if if I couldn't get this album for $9.99!

Well done

Evanescence has done it again—that is created an outstanding album with Amy’s beautiful voice soaring over piano, guitars, and strings. These songs are like poems—what lyrics! My favorite songs from this album are "Sweet Sacrifice," which is very different-sounding, "Call Me When You're Sober," "Lithium," "Lacrymosa," and "Your Star." Although, this is definitely a step down from Fallen. I’m not too crazy about “Like You”—Bow Wow’s is better. This CD debuted at an anticipated #1 on Billboard after the multi-platinum success of Fallen and the album’s top-ten hit, Call Me When You’re Sober.

Biography

Formed: 199z in Little Rock, AR

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The goth-inspired Arkansas rock band Evanescence, with its Linkin Park-meets-Tori Amos sound backed by chugging guitars, easily made it to the top of the charts in 2003 with its Wind-Up Entertainment debut album, Fallen. Singer/pianist Amy Lee and guitarist/songwriter Ben Moody formed the band at the end of the '90s after meeting in their early teens during a "youth camp," Moody said in a statement. "I heard Amy playing Meat Loaf's 'I'd Do Anything for Love'...
