Album Review
Give Maroon 5 considerable credit for letting themselves be heavily remixed on Call and Response: The Remix Album, letting hipsters from Mark Ronson to Of Montreal cut and paste, turn and twist the original tracks into something that says more about the remixers than the band itself. Now, whether the end result winds up entertaining either camp — either fans of the band or the remixers — is another question entirely, but at least Call and Response is interesting, letting ?uestlove, Pharrell Williams, and Bloodshy & Avant rub shoulders with power poppers Phantom Planet and experimental rockers Deerhoof. This wide net says more about Maroon 5's fashion than it does their music — they're sharp and smart enough to know what will get them club play and blog mentions — but it's nice to have a band so big try to tie together these two niches, even if neither the R&B nor the indie rock winds up relating to the happy mainstream hooks of the group's hits. This disconnect isn't disconcerting — often, the album is pleasant enough as background music — but it does mean that Call and Response doesn't have much lasting interest for fans of anybody involved in this curious project.

Maroon 5 - Remixes
If I never See Your Face Again - Avg. remix here, nothing good. 2/5 Wake Up Call - Some techno buzzing hurts the ears here, Mary J. does nice. 3.5/5 Sunday Morning - Genius ?estlove does nice production here. Very enjoyable. 4/5 Makes Me Wonder - Hip Hopper Just Blaze takes a shot here. Hip Hop production does not fit much. 2/5 This Love - Techno remix here. The vocals sound too distorted. 2.5/5 She Will Be Loved (Pharell Remix) - Pharell does the most fitting production of anyone here. Simply works. 5/5 Shiver (DJ Quick Mix) - While the production is interesting, it does not suite the vocals. 3/5 Wake Up Call (David Banner Remix) - The production is nice by Banner. He does a pretty weak performance. 3.5/5 Harder to Breath (Cool Kids) - Average here. Cool Kids do not shine anywhere. 2/5 Little of Your Time (Bloodshy & Avant) - Prettty bad, nothing is average. 1.5/5 Little of Your Time (Of Montreal Mix) - Absolutely terrible. The techno is horrid. 1/5 Goodnight Goodnight (Deerhoof) - Sounds like a real song here, nothing outstanding, but pretty nice. 3.5/5 Not Falling Apart (Tiesto Remix) - If you listen, the production sounds great. But it is too long and the vocals are off. 3.5/5 Better That We Break (Doc & Muhammad Mix) - Production does not fit with lyrics. 2/5 Secret (Premier 5 Remix) - Nice remix here, annoying in parts. 3/5 Woman (Sam Farrar Remix) - The production was almost perfect here, but almost is not there. 3.5/5 This Love (Galactic Beach House Mix) - Another overly long remix. 1.5/5 If I Never See Your Face Again (feat. Rihanna) - Long remix to the remixed song. 2.5/5 OVERALL - The hip hop remixes are pretty good, as are a few others. BUY Sunday Morning (QuestLove Remix) She Will Be Loved (Pharell Remix)
Hmm... Interesting
Maroon 5 hasn't put out a CD that I don't like, which includes this one, however, I feel that there should have been more of a variance or something else new that was put on this album. Besides the fact that I've heard half of the remixes before, I really like it. The first few tracks, especially If I Never See Your Face Again (feat. Cross) and Wake Up Call (with Mary J Blige) are really good. Also, the Makes Me Wonder remix is very creepy (in a good way), but then there are remixes that I'd rather not hear again, like the remix of Secret and Woman. Overall, the CD is good, and worthy of Maroon 5's prestige, however, I also feel that it's somewhat lacking... Lacking that something that makes it glisten.
Understated, slick, laid back and generally great.
When I first saw the word "remix" I thought, oh god!, but having listened to the album, I can honestly say that it provides a stripped back, more intimate feel to the songs. It's an odd album, purely because it feels like it should be an intimate acoustic album, but just Levine's voice, and yet, there's beats and synthesisers going in the back ground. Kitsch would be my word...Maroon 5 lovers might hate it because it lacks the spunk of their earlier albums; people who don't like Maroon 5 might love it because it's more digestible; personally, I love Maroon 5 and I also love this album because it totally reinvents the songs and takes them in new directions, for this, we must thank the ever talented producers. A great album, one to buy and enjoy for a very long time.
