Maybe the most underrated vocalist of the late ’50s/early ’60s, Philly idol Rydell was second only to Dion and Darin in his ability to sing and swing. The triumvirate of “Volare,” “Sway,” and “That Old Black Magic” attest to the latter, while hits like “Wild One” and “Swingin’ School” are the epitome of joyous, pre-Beatle teen rock. “Good Time Baby” and the raucous party invitation “Third House (in From the Right)” bounce and drive relentlessly. Less intense but melodically strong, Rydell’s final hits, “Forget Him” and “I’ll Never Dance Again,” reveal his ease with subtler, more demanding material.

Back at last

At last, almost all of Bobby Rydell's Cameo releases in one place. It is great to hear World Without Love and I'll Never Dance Again in his full, vigorous style. The British versions were soothing, but lacked the dynamism that Bobby could project. One cut that I remember that is still missing: The Door to Paradise. Would like to hear that again someday.
