iTunes Review

From Saginaw, Michigan, by way of Texas, ? & the Mysterians may have known widespread glory only briefly, but their Farfisa-propelled, semi-psychadelic pop would inspire retro-punks and avant bluesmen for years to come. The band’s 1966 monster hit “96 Tears” is the undisputed highlight of this essential collection, but stopping there would mean missing out on the funhouse organ and please-please vocals of “Don’t Tease Me,” the fuzztone come-on “Girl (You Captivate Me),” or the irresistible garage groove of “Smokes.”

The Roots of Indie Rock!

If you're looking for indie rock's early sound, you need not look any further. ? & the Mysterians offer up fun garage band sounds with the slight low-fi production adopted by many popular groups today. The Best Of ablum won't disappoint and promises more hits than just "96 Tears". Try Girl (You Captivate Me) and Do Something to Me, both great tracks. Enjoy!

Cameo Parkway

? was the first artist to use a symbol as his name. They're from Bay City not Saginaw. Great bass lines from Mel who goes on to rock in Grand Funk.

69 Tears

If you're new to ? and the Mysterians this is definitely THE place to start. 96 tears will be forever embedded in the subconscious of everyone's mind who is exposed to it. The two previously unreleased songs are radical, and hold a considerable candle to the originals. Best $12 you'll spend on itunes!

It only took one song, the organ-driven number one smash "96 Tears," to make ? & the Mysterians into garage rock legends. Eccentric frontman Question Mark (actually spelled "?," once he had his name legally changed) cultivated an aura of mystery by never appearing in public without a pair of wraparound sunglasses; he frequently claimed he had been born on Mars and lived among the dinosaurs in a past life, and that voices from the future had revealed he would be performing "96 Tears" in the year...
