Album Review

Linda Ronstadt abandoned the pop audience in 1983, turning toward traditional pop music. She recorded three albums with Nelson Riddle before changing direction yet again, this time recording a set of traditional Mexican songs titled Canciones de Mi Padre. As the title suggests, the record is a fairly sentimental collection, since these are songs from her childhood and her heritage. Occasionally, Ronstadt oversells the songs but overall, the album is charming, affectionate, entertaining, and more successful than her stilted Nelson Riddle collaborations.

I love this album, it brings back childhood memories of family celebrations (I could almost smell the roasting chile!)

Yes! When Linda Ronstadt transitioned into Ranchera, it was the perfect move. She does not "oversell" these songs-the falsettos are an essential part of this type of music. Rancheras always take you to the core of the sadness or happiness in the message of the song. "Charming" and "entertaining"? Are you serious? I bet the first time that reviewer heard this was during his lunch hour from some jukebox at a Mexican restaurant, completely ignoring what Ranchera music is about...Whatever I think, it is always great to see an artist thrive in two entirely different genres and I have never seen this successfully accomplished before like Linda Ronstadt has.

For the album reviewer to say that "Ronstadt oversells the songs..." suggests to me that he knows nothing of this genre.
