don't fear the funk

by negrophile

Respect to Gringorubronegro and the thoughts shared about this recording. I steered away from it fearing it lacked the funk of previous Carlinhos recordings. Then, last night I saw "El Milagro de Candeal" and came to a better appreciation of the roots of Carlinhos' vibe. It's straight up Africa with a healthy nod to the eclectic creativity of Tropicalismo. The funk is most definitely present in "Candombless," it's just raw and unadulterated. Anyone who has enjoyed Carnaval in Bahia or who feels the Bill Laswell releases "Bahia Black - Ritual Beating System," or "Imaginary Cuba" can easily get with this. Don't fear unadulterated funk.

Carlinhos Brown's tribute to Candomble

by Gringorubronegro

This isn't really a typical Carlinhos Brown CD (if such a thing exists), but rather his respectful, but somewhat experimental, tribute to Candomble, the Afro-Brazilian religion popular in Bahia and many other parts of Brazil. Think of it as a dub-remix version of a more ethnomusicological recording, with amazing drumming and some odd insertions of electronic blips and found noise, and you'll get the picture. Great if you love complex polyrhythms. But not easy-listening pop, nor Carlinhos Brown's more typical Brazilian funk, not by a long shot.
