Album Review

Can't Have Nothin' Nice collects live tracks, studio outtakes, and other rarities from these unsung heroes of alternative country. The live cuts include an acoustic version of "Boys Will Be Boys," as well as barroom favorites such as "Drank So Much (Just Feel Stupid)" and "Cut Me Off." The Gear Daddies were a seasoned road band, and these live tracks capture the band's stage energy. Can't Have Nothin' Nice also boasts a solid selection of studio outtakes, including "Bored and 19" and "Get It Right Someday" — two slices of Midwestern Americana that are as good as the best material from the Gear Daddies' studio albums. Another highlight is the band's cover of Prince's "Little Red Corvette," which had previously been available only on a limited-edition 7". Dripping with pedal steel guitar, the Gear Daddies' reading of the song is pure country. Although Can't Have Nothin' Nice offers some gems, the collection is a mixed bag. Tracks like "Minnesota Polka" and "Spider Monkey" merely show the band goofing off in the studio. "Chip and Dale" captures the band telling bad jokes on stage. These tracks offer little humor and even less musical value for anyone except the most devoted fan. The light-hearted moments do show a band that never took itself too seriously. This trait was a big part of the Gear Daddies' appeal and made much of the band's best music so great.

Fantastic and Fun Music

Gear Daddies may be small and local, but their music will have the longevity of bands who made it big on a national scale. I recently was able to hear these guys live (after 20 years of wishing I could) and was appropriately impressed. This band of longtime friends has a folksy rock sound that really draws the listener in and keeps you there. Finding Martin Zellar on itunes with his own solo stuff is great and gives a "fix" for those pining for his undeniably individual vocal characteristics. Tracks "Chip and Dale" and "African Killer Bees" show the fun this band had with a live audience, their comfort in performing plus it also makes the audience feel like a member of the band and part of the show when they are just goofing around. I really enjoyed their recent perfornamce at THE SURF BALLROOM in Clear Lake, IA and I can't wait to catch another performance in the future! Thank You Gear Daddies and Martin Zellar for bringing these fun and memorable songs to my life! :)

music for everyone

Kirby's in moorhead(R.I.P.) then the Pavillion, now the Venue @ the Hub. the Gear Daddies have outlasted most of the bars they have been playing at for years...Please keep the tours coming... from your fans in your 2nd home...Fargo/Moorhead. there music somes up the feelings of anyone who grew up in the eighties. if you like this album see them live. they pretty much play this entire album straight through...

A Killer Album everyone should own!

This has been a great album for so many years. I keep going back and listening to it again and again. Martin Zellar is an incredible singer and I wish he would get more exposure while he is on top of his game. His shows are crowd pleasers and he is truly talented. This compilation is what the Gear Daddies are all about. "Boys Will Be Boys", "She's Happy", "Cut Me Off", "Stupid Boy" and "Drank So Much" are the true gems, but many others are nice extras. Question???? Where is My Maria and Little Red Corvette?? BUY THIS NOW you won't regret it. And get out to a Gear Daddies reunion show, or maybe a Zellar "Neil Diamond" show! -Zelmo-
