Album Review
At first, the music of Bob Reynolds and his basic sound seem pretty similar in spots to Michael Brecker, being technically skilled, complex, and yet somewhat accessible. Later in this CD, Reynolds hints at the soul of Stanley Turrentine when he simplifies his message. Chances are that none of his ten originals will catch on as future standards, although they have their appealing moments, but the playing by Reynolds and his quintet/sextet (which includes Aaron Goldberg mostly on electric piano, guitarist Mike Moreno, and two appearances by steel guitarist David Soler) is first-rate and creative within the modern mainstream. An impressive debut overall.

This is good stuff
Finally, a new artist with a great new sound. Bob combines all the elements of jazz with clean solo work and a musicality that is missing in so much of today's "Fusion Jazz". All of his compositions have singable melodies and harmonies that are easy to listen to but not predictable. The simplicity can be appreciated by newcomers and the complexities are intriguing to the veterans. Best of all, we are hearing the real Bob through the music. He's not writing to please anyone but himself and he's made of good stuff. Give this a listen...you'll like what you hear.
Awesome Stuff!
Reynolds is that new type of artist that gets you hooked. His groove is quite catchy, yet not unique and soulful. I highly recommend the entire album. If not, at least: Common Ground, Fiction and Last Minute. Five Stars.
One not to miss
With this album, Bob Reynolds has created a soulful, intelligent, and accessable sound that grooves...hard. His tasteful solos, and those of his rhythm section, compliment each original composition very well. I sincerely hope many others will enjoy his art as I have.
