Album Review

Captain, My Captain, the sophomore album from the queercore band Team Dresch, resumes where Personal Best left off two years earlier. Like Personal Best, Captain, My Captain focuses on the struggle, angst, and confusion of being a lesbian. At the same time, the album is able to transcend the lesbian cause, making universally applicable statements about individual freedom, politics, and self-respect. The following quote illustrates the superior lyrics: "My mom says she loves me but I don't think its love 'cause she only loves me when I act just like she does and that's emotional blackmail." The fierce and biting lyrics are aided by raging, skilled punk rock sounds, creating one of the most intense and meaningful punk revival albums to date. Unfortunately, Captain My Captain, which yields few innovations, is unable to surpass the high standard set by Personal Best. However, Team Dresch is still able to accomplish more in this 35 minutes than many bands can in their entire career.

Customer Reviews

back in the day

If only now where ten years ago and the kiddies of America could enjoy the depths of Team Dresch. Breaking the straight guy like myself into the world of music without stereotype. Team Dresch opened my eyes to any band that rocked, gay or straight. I thank them for opening me up to the last ten years of music I've enjoyed. Team Dresch led me to Bikini Kill, Fugazi and the Swirlies. This album, and personal best should be absolute staples in any music fans life.

And How Certain Things Are Said

I almost want to say that this album has an up-beat, light-hearted tone because of its overall high energy, but the guitar work and lyrical content will pull you into something more introspective and overwhelming. This stuff is seriously intense, and even their more humorous lyrics are overshadowed by the overall theme of dealing with oppression. Captain My Captain artfully describes the ordinary struggles of gays, making it a queercore classic, but its message will also extend beyond queer youth. Some of my favorites include, "Yes I Am Too, But Who Am I Really?" , "Take on Me" and "Uncle Phranc." The genius of this group was cut off short, and although they have reunited, I am still (impatiently) awaiting the release of their new album. If they were this good in '96, just imagine how they are now!
