Country and folk blues aren't exactly known for inspiring projects born of years-long gestations or tortuous recording marathons. But then, Lucinda Williams is hardly your typical country artist. Only the second album she recorded in the decade since her highly regarded 1988 album Lucinda Williams, this collection was the product of six long years in the studio, sessions that saw notorious perfectionist Williams scrap one approach and take after another in search of elusive perfection. But Williams' obsessive bent paid multiple dividends on the resulting 1998 collection with gritty performances like title track and "Can't Let Go," scoring her many critical kudos, expanding her audience beyond a long-loyal cult, and scoring a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Welcome to Lucinda

If you're not familiar with her, this is a great place to start with Lucinda Williams. Any album containing tracks that make an ex-girlfriend cry in your presence when you play them is worthwhile. "Car Wheels" is just this kind of album--and it defines the genre of "Alternative Country."

One of the best albums of the 90's

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is an amazing record with consistently great songs. Right in Time is a classic song of love that has gone right. The title track moves into the country rock tradition with tremendous success. 2 Cool 2 Be 4-Gotten and Drunken Angel shine as do Can't Let Go and Metal Firecracker. Really, the album has no weak songs and I can't recommend it higher. If you like this, you might also like Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams and any other release from Lucinda. It is a pity Itunes doesn't have Lucinda's self titled debut, which is another amazing record. They really should, and it too deserves 5 stars.

It was "Passionate Kisses" by Mary Chapin Carpenter that led me to the work of Miss Lucinda Williams and "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" is one CD I just "Can't Let Go!" { I have played and recommended this "Metal Firecracker" of an album to so many people!} Lucinda, You had me from the first twangy tempos & wonderous words of "Right In Time!" (It's almost as if Janis Joplin met up with the Rolling Stones in a crummy juke-joint down to Lake Charles, Louisiana; and they all got drunk and sang Hank Williams and Muddy Waters tunes and somebody recorded it on a beat-up old 8-track and it was just unearthed yesterday!) Lucinda Williams may think she "Lost It"; but "Car Wheels" finds her & her magnificent backing musicians on the right "Gravel Road!" Find your "Joy" here!...by Grimmbo.
