Album Review

Drawing on rock, salsa, and jazz, Santana recorded one imaginative, unpredictable gem after another during the 1970s. But Caravanserai is daring even by Santana's high standards. Carlos Santana was obviously very hip to jazz fusion — something the innovative guitarist provides a generous dose of on the largely instrumental Caravanserai. Whether its approach is jazz-rock or simply rock, this album is consistently inspired and quite adventurous. Full of heartfelt, introspective guitar solos, it lacks the immediacy of Santana or Abraxas. Like the type of jazz that influenced it, this pearl (which marked the beginning of keyboardist/composer Tom Coster's highly beneficial membership in the band) requires a number of listenings in order to be absorbed and fully appreciated. But make no mistake: this is one of Santana's finest accomplishments.

Customer Reviews

Wow...simply Wow

I've been listening to this album since middleschool and it is without a doubt my favorate albulm in my collection. Its pretty much Carlos Santana doing what he does best which is taking traditional latin style music and mixing it with other styles, but this albulm takes a much bigger influence from Jazz. The only problem is that the albulm sounds very experimental (its baisicly 1972 fusion), so there is really nothing that poppy in it, so there aren't really any hits, but it is just such a good listen from beggining to end. so if you know santana from any albulm released after supernatural your in for a surprize. If you aren't gonna buy the whole album at least download "all the love of the universe." It is without a doubt the best song in the albulm and one of the greatest songs ever written. This album really shows what Carlos Santana is really capable of and that his recent hits while good, are no where near as good as he was back in the day.

Explore A Deep Track Masterpiece Album

This album hit me in college in the late 70's. This is not a hits album. You put this album on in the background and just let it infuse your soul. For those of you who want to explore a completely different Santana sound, this is it. A perfect synthesis blend of jazz and latin sounds from end to end. You don't even have to flip the album these days. Enjoy!

A Masterpiece , Spiritual and Beautiful in so many ways

This is an album I originally did not relate well to when it came out but I have since re-discovered it and consider it a masterwork. Unbelievably powerful and spiritual. It blends rock and jazz beautifully. Powerful Santana guitar work blended with almost Middle Eastern percussion influences. I love the whole album but Song of the Wind, Stone Flower and Every Step of the Way I can listen to over and over again without boredom setting in. This is not a pop hits kind of album but is powerful and beautiful.

Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to its combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana's distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and it enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early '70s. The musical direction then changed to a more contemplative and jazzy style as the band's early personnel...
