iTunes Review
Ryan Adams has an encyclopedic knowledge of classic rock and he can press those influences into service wherever he sees fit. His songwriting has often had a comforting familiarity to it, with guitar riffs and melodies that hint towards past glories. With an tight efficient band behind him in the Cardinals, whose pedal steel master Jon Graboff deserves special distinction, Adams delivers this tight, focused 12 song collection. “Born into the Light” begins things with a gorgeous placidity, a lulling sense of sunshine that’s further reflected in the lyrics where an anxious young man settles into the calm perspective of middle age. The modest funk of “Fix It” turns towards R&B, with guitarist Neal Casal (a deserving solo artist himself) adding an extra edge. “Magick” crashes a few guitar chords for a look towards Adams’ punk roots with global apocalypse hanging over the exultant beat. By the time Adams arrives at the piano ballad “Stop,” he’s bleeding all over the tracks, determined to turn his often controversial life around to something he can manage over the long haul.
Customer Reviews
C'mon are you Ryan Adams fans serious???
This record is just "okay" and not the greatest release of RA's career like some of these reviewers are making it out be. First off Cold Roses (1 &2) and Jacksonville City Nights blow this record away. I have my faults with Easy Tiger for sure, but at least Easy Tiger hit with some great songs (Goodnight Rose, Tears of Gold, Pearls on a String to name a few). Born into a Light, Go Easy and Evergreen are probably the best songs on here, but that's not saying too much. Im just shocked at some the 5 star reviews....it really does not deserve that high of praise. The best thing about this record is that for the most part, is focused. However, being focused means creating songs to play on some Lifetime movie or god awful movie like Hope Floats 2: The Rebirth. After Jacksonville City Nights, which in my opinion is one of Ryan Adams best pieces, Ryan has started slacking. 29 was just a mess, besides Carolina Rain and Strawberry WIne. Easy Tiger was pretty good, def. grew on me. Follow the Lights was horrible and now this record. I just want a rowdy, F%cked up record with 2:30 song. And by the way, if Ryan Adam's can kick his addiction to substance abuse.....then why can't he give up the those ridiculous songs on the piano?
RYAN AND THE CARDINALS DO IT AGAIN!
The Cardinals have really hit their stride. I saw them in Boston in September where they debuted some of these songs and I could not wait for this album. It really displays Adams ability to write well crafted songs and with the rest of the Cardinals behind him the music just takes off. Vocally it's beautifully layered with Neal Casal providing perfect backing vocals where he manages to add his own personal touch to all the lyrics he sings. The rest of the band is always there perfectly complementing each other. John Graboff's steel guitar offers a really nice touch to the music and his fills are always right where you expect them to be. If you are a fan of Gold, Demolition, Cold Roses, and his early Whiskeytown recordings then you will be pleased at what is offered with Cardinology. They put it all together and it's executed wonderfully.
Ryan sounds better than ever.
Just after 5 or 6 times through this album, it becomes obvious that his voice sounds better than ever. I really have to listen a lot more to come out with a final verdict, but as it is, there isnt much from him that isnt 5 stars, and this one is the same. My favorite so far is Go Easy.
