Album Review
The first volume in The Carl Stalling Project series is a revelation; more than just an essential part of a Warner Bros. staff that generated some of the finest and most inspired productions in the history of animation, Stalling was a visionary whose work deserves consideration among the finest American avant-garde music ever recorded. As these 15 selections from WB cartoons dating between 1936 and 1958 attest, his cut and paste style — a singular collision between jazz, classical, pop, and virtually everything else in between — was unprecedented in its utter disregard for notions of time, rhythm, and compositional development; Stalling didn't just break the rules, he made them irrelevant. That in the process he created music beloved by succeeding generations of children is more impressive still — perhaps even unwittingly, Stalling introduced the avant-garde into the mainstream, and as popular music continues to diversify and hybridize, his stature as a pioneer rightfully continues to grow.

Missing 4 songs from the CD but is good regardless
I love listening to this. Seriously. I'm not saying it because I love Looney Tunes from an artist's perspective. I've had this on a CD for several years and you would think why in the world would anyone want to listen to "cartoon music". It's not really cartoon, there's no Treg Brown sound effects so it's really a lot of classical music and classic songs. When I need to concentrate on work, I can play this and get my work done. It's also very interesting to listen to how these were made - "In Session" gives you a picture in your head that you're in the studio and this is being recorded LIVE with the entire orchestra. I have all 6 Looney Tunes Golden Collections 4-disc sets. I'll play those at work too but you definitely don't hear all the orchestral pieces behind the voice-overs and sound effects. However, together they do prove that they worked extremely well together and created a true work of art combining all their talents into these shorts. Some of these are the songs from the cartoon in length (somewhat, "Hillbilly Hare" cuts off right after they start into the square dance routine if you're familiar with it, so you can't sing along 'durnit'), others give you insight of how these were created, and some contain a mixture of popular musical parts from popular cartoons that you will recognize. I gave this 4 stars only because of the missing songs. But by all means, give the selection below a try. I've not bought the second part of this only because I've read that it wasn't as good as this collection was. The CD contains the following songs missing below: =The Good Egg =Various Cues from Bugs Bunny Films (1943-1956) =The War Years =Medley - Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals Two tracks below are mislabeled: =should be "Speedy Gonzales Meets Two Crows from Tacos" =the "Carl Stalling with Milt Franklyn In Session" is called "In Sesson (1951-1956)" on the CD That's all folks! :)
