Album Review
Pianist Joe Sample was a pioneer at creating melodic and accessible pop-jazz. His recordings of the 1970s and '80s were consistently popular, especially this best-seller. Sample is joined on most selections by fellow Crusader Stix Hooper on drums; electric bassist Abraham Laboriel; percussionist Paulinho Da Costa; and, often, guitarist Dean Parks. Flutist Hubert Laws guests on "Midnight and Mist." Although it would not be considered creative jazz, the catchy and often-memorable melodies, and Sample's fine playing, makes this CD reissue a pretty definitive example of his solo recordings.

Sample's Best !
Welcome to the Monterey Peninsula. The intensity of raging seas meets the serenity of misty rain as Joe Sample's keyboard narrates a fantasy tour through one of America's most beautiful landscapes. From the opening notes of "Carmel" through the final hypnotic strains of "More Beautiful Each Day," Joe captures every color on ivory. "Sunrise" brings an intense, urgent melody, with variations on a theme ever-raising the stakes. "Cannery Row" evokes images of honky tonk nights filled with ragtime music and tawdry tales. Joe switches to electronic keyboards for "A Rainy Day in Monterey," painting a masterful landscapes with a lighter-than-air touch. Joe Sample's 40+ year career has produced an extraordinary body of work, but none so complete in theme and execution as "Carmel."
Music I remember
Joe's music takes me back years. I appreciate it for it simplistic yet penetrating melodies. Like "Voices in the Rain" Carmel is comforting during stressful times like these.
BRAVO!
It's not only one of Sample's most beautiful albums, it's one of THE most beautiful albums of all time!
