Three Instant Classics = Five stars and a Merry Christmas!!
A new star is rising on the horizon and what better time to rise than Christmas eve. Emmy Rossum shines brilliantly in this collection of classic carols. The range/tone of her voice, her perfect articulation and her reverence for music is breathtaking. In these three songs, one can truly appreciate Rossum’s broad and impressive qualities as a musician and the gift she has given us this Christmas. The songs are approached differently but unified by skillfull singing and smart arrangements. Just modern enough, they are must haves for Christmas. In “Carol of the Bells,” she uses a technique of vocal layering, arranging and instrumentation that produces a lush and spirited version of the song with an edgy modern quality. She sings every vocal part creating the sound of bells tolling and voices caroling in a very fast pace with great dexterity and range. It is interesting that Emmy was listed as a vocal arranger in the liner notes of her album “Inside Out.” When one listens to the detail in the arrangement of this carol as well as in some of the songs on her album, you begin to understand the breadth of Emmy’s vocal talent and her intelligence in songwriting and arranging. In “O Holy Night”, she pulls the layering back to reveal the true majesty of her voice. She sings the song in a sweetness of tone that is touching and reverent and displays the full range of her voice. When she hits the high E Flat at the end we know that this is truly one voice that will be in our ears and on our playlists for decades to come. Appropriately, she adds some of her own background vocals as the song crescendos to its peak and when one hears the “angels voices.” Even within a somewhat traditional arrangement, she adds some interesting touches to differentiate this from more classic versions and make it her own–she uses mellow bells in place of the usual piano and introduces some subtle drum programming. In “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” she sings in one voice and what a voice it is! Her robust dazzling tone and emotional delivery make this an instant classic. She touches our hearts with her expression of melancholy and hope for a better future. When her voice catches, it stirs our heart, and when it soars we know that next Christmas will be better and all our “troubles will be far away.”. She gracefully glides through this song making it sound easy when it may be one of the most difficult carols to sing effectively. There is also the beautiful relationship/arrangement between the cello and piano which subtly compliments Rossum’s vocal.
Leaves Me Wanting More
Emmy Rossum's voice has definitely matured since "Phantom of the Opera". These beautiful Christmas songs showcase how rich and dynamic her voice has become. The emotion and warmth she conveys in these songs can certainly be felt, especially in "Oh Holy Night". This EP is very uplifting and makes me look forward to a complete Christmas album release in the future.
Beautiful!
This mix of Christmas carols flows together well and sounds wonderful. Emmy has a strong, beautiful voice that shines. "Carol of the Bells" flows like the tracks off of Emmy's "Inside Out" CD and it works well for the "ding-dong" sounds in the song. The other tracks are just her showcasing her voice, and are sung very reverently. They sound very beautiful and full of emotion, and there is also some beautiful instrumentation as well. This EP is a great buy for the Christmas season and I am fully enjoying my purchase of it.
