iTunes Review

Initially a mostly instrumental side project of Giant Sand’s rhythm section, after nearly two decades Calexico (Joey Burns and John Convertino) are now a full-time musical tour de force, employing guests — from Iron and Wine’s Sam Beam to Tortoise’s Douglas McCombs — as the duo hear fit. Their songs tell tales that reflect the mix of southwestern rock, country, folk, blues, Tejano, and Latin music that first gave them their “border rock” reputation. The opening cut, “Victor Jara’s Hands” speaks of the activist-musician tortured and murdered by Chilean police in 1973, while the fate of families of Chilean exiles is explored with Sam Beam on the horn-fueled “House of Valparaiso.” “Inspiracion,” with Amparo Sanchez of Amparanoia (with whom the duo recently recorded their debut album), enjoys a festive horn-based celebration. Willie Nelson’s harmonica man Mickey Raphael throws a few expert notes into the spare and haunted “Bend to the Road.” Pieta Brown adds her countrified vocal styling to the pedal steel colored “Slowness.” While Burns and Convertino have taken solid control of their destiny and sound, they’ve done so by sharing the spotlight with good friends who make their albums feel like communal efforts.

Great return to form

It says a lot about music industry "thinkers" that i-tunes doesn't even list this new Calexico cd on this week's new releases. What a joy it was to listen to this while walking the dog at the beach this morning here at the tip of Cape Cod. If I used one word to describe it I'd choose "warm". Calexico has always been in my top 3 favorite list, and this new cd is one of their best.

Best Band in America

Calexico is without a doubt the best band in America. Each song paints a picture for the listener stocked with melodic imagery that is crafted by some of the top musicians around. Burns and Convertino are at the top of their game with this batch of songs. They are the text book definition of the word eclectic. Seeing them live is also a one of a kind musical experience-if your head is not tacked down well to your neck it just may pop off. Undoubtedly in the top 10 of '08

This is an amazing band with top notch musicians!

Wow. Calexico builds upon their earlier work with the addition to some remarkable sonic explorations, soul filled lyrics, some grooving tracks, and a western landscape inspired sound that only can be Calexico. These guys are top notch musicians - a must have for any serious lover of music. Put it on and be prepared to be transported to the vast landscapes around Tucson! For me the best tracks are El Gatillo, Fractured Air (Jamaican dub meets Mariachi? - fun stuff!), Bend to the Road, Pulpo, and Inspiracion. But really this is a true albumn and all the songs flow together nicely.

Calexico, a Tucson collective of musicians focused around Joey Burns and John Convertino, forged an eclectic identity through their exploration of Southwestern culture. Composer Ennio Morricone's spaghetti Westerns as well as Portuguese fado, Afro-Peruvian music, and '50s and '60s jazz, country, and surf music all factored into Calexico's music. Burns studied classical music at the University of California, Irvine, before starting his rock career, and Calexico formed after Burns met John Convertino...
