iTunes Review
Combining British-style prog-rock with Middle American values, Kansas became a force to be reckoned with, thanks to its ambitious themes and grandiose sound. The Best of Kansas draws upon the band’s work from their mid-‘70s heyday through their less-remembered early ‘80s period. Steve Walsh’s clear-toned vocals lend these tracks a heroic quality, while his keyboard touch adds neo-classical embellishments. Also crucial to the Kansas sound is Robbie Steinhardt’s deft violin work and Kerry Livgren’s strategic guitar crunch. The mega-hits “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind” define Kansas’ twin polarities — the stirring optimism of the first tune balances the bleak fatalism of the other. Kansas’ catalogue includes Aaron Copeland-like effusions (“Song for America”), bold anthems (“Point of Know Return”), passionate power ballads (“Play the Game Tonight”), and even New Wavy synth-rockers (“Fight Fire With Fire”). Glimmers of the spiritual yearnings that would later inspire Livgren to pursue a Christian music career are evident in “Hold On” and “The Wall.” At times overblown but always in earnest, Kansas remains a classic rock favorite.

Awesome
by im not crunk till' 3I used to like hip-hop and electronic. This album made me like rock.
Half great, but missing some obvious "best" tracks and including some head scratchers.....
by Rich LionWhile there is no dispute over several of the songs here, the remainder are somewhat of a mystery. Obviously "Carry On..." "Dust.." "....Know Return" "Play the Game..." "Fight Fire..." and "Hold On" were all radio hits. Conspicously absent on this count is "People of the South Wind" which was one of their higher charting singles (and quite a catchy tune IMO). "The Wall" and "Song for America" are also popular among fans -- the rest I'm guessing were favorite picks of the band members and not what fans would consider "the best of...." Songs like "Portrait" "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)" "Miracles Out of Nowhere" should definitely come before "The Devil Game. (My guess is "The Devil Game" is one of the few (only?) Kansas songs to have a writing credit for Dave Hope but otherwise it makes NO sense to include in a "best of..." collection!) "No One Together" and "Closet Chronciles" are fine tunes but again debatable as to whether they deserve to be on a "best of..." collection. I agree with others who say look to other best of collections or download individual tracks, or just go for the original albums. Fans of Kerry Livgren's Christian songs should check out "Relentless" from "Audiovisions" and "Crossfire" from "Vinyl Confessions".
