Customer Reviews
Passionate and musical, while technically dexterous
First, I would like to assure you that the correct tracks are now downloading. Second, I recommend this recording as quite possibly the definitive recording of Carter's Quartets 1 and 5. (After listening to these, I think I can be so bold as to say that 2 - 4 will be equally as outstanding). Not only is there fantastic virtuosity and individual character among them, but also astounding ensemble playing. Their nuanced rendering follows every dynamic and phrase marking indicated by Carter while expressing lyricism and rhythmic energy with zeal to spare! Simin Ganatra stands out with her lovely singing tone (especially impressive in the treacherous high register), and Brandon Vamos for making Carter's rhythmic complexity sound as simple and natural as Mozart. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!
At last a new recording of a momental work.
I love the Arditti recordings but it's refreshing to see a young group such as the Pasifica pick up the tourch and keep these works in rotation. They have to because the Kronos Quartet wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Then again I'm not sure the Kronos has even heard of Elliott Carter. He's never written anything that includes a pipa and screaming.
Excellent because it's challenging
Carter is really underrated in the U.S. outside of academia. I'm a classical music novice, but I mostly prefer 20th century composers and Carter's compositions are rigorous and fulfilling. The Pacifica Quartet's timing means that the ebb and flow of Carter's compositions stay structured but natural.
