In respones to the guy who walked out on Case's Santa Monica show for the Case for Case album I want to quote Bob Dylan when he was asked if reviews bother or affect him. He said (and I may not have it exactly right but it was basically) I'd like to see one of these a--holes try and do what I do for just 5 minutes in front of 1, 2, 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000 people. Many of the takes of Case's songs on this album are really good and some not so good but all in all there's a lot of sincere soulful musical interpretation going down. I particularly like Chris Smither, Kim Richey, Will Kimbrough, Joe Ely, and Hayes Carll.

Nice record!

To hear the previous reviewer tell it, this 3-CD trawl through interpretations of Case's storied writing is bust from beginning to end. Not hardly. This writer takes personal offense with "Eric" for his short-sighted view that, save for a couple of big-name winger/songwriters, this compilation does not do Case's material justice. I am the co-producer, arranger and drummer/backing vocalist on Steven Jackson's version of "Crooked Mile" from the collection. What we attempted to do with this particular tune was to interpret it as Case would have interpreted one of his favorite old tunes from another writer. The subject matter lent itself to a gospel interpretation, on the spot and in the moment, so that is the way the tune went to tape. And not having a black gospel choir to "answer" Case's question in the lyric, I created one. In light of this, I was told that Mr. Case actually heard our take on the tune and really enjoyed it. The reviews from the UK and California have singled out the relatively unknown Steven Jackson's version of "Crooked Mile" as being one of the unexpected highlights of the record. Give this record another try, and you will see that these are not "covers" but interpretations of a songwriter and musician who's work is most often sorely overlooked and underrated.

A Case Against Case

Let me start by stating for the record that I have been a Peter Case fan for close to 20 years, own all of his records and have seen him live several times. I am also a fan of SOME of the artists on this lengthy tribute album. That said, this is a sad compilation of poorly performed Case songs and is, in my opinion, more of an insult to Peter than a celebration of his work. With the exception of Kevn Kinney, Todd Snider, Clair Holley and Dave Alvin, the artists on this record sound as though they’ve never even heard the songs they are performing. Compared to the original versions of these songs, the musicianship is lackluster, the vocals are often presented with little or no emotion and the song selection itself is questionable in some instances. I had the misfortune of seeing “Peter Case & Friends” perform some of these songs at McCabe’s in Santa Monica, CA. several months ago. I walked out after about 40 minutes, something I’ve never done. If you’re a fan of Peter’s music, I recommend you download Todd Snider’s version of Travelin’ Light and put the remaining 49 dollars back in your pocket.
