Album Review

Tonic amassed a total of six charting Billboard singles between 1996 and 2002 — enough for a greatest-hits album but not a long one, and at 12 songs, Casual Affair: The Best of Tonic is certainly not long. Released as a tie-in for the band's 2009 reunion tour, Casual Affair has all those hits — the biggest of which is 1997's "If You Could Only See," which reached number one on the Mainstream Rock chart (but "Open Your Eyes" and "You Wanted More" also reached the Mainstream Top Ten) — plus six other highlights from their three albums, adding live versions of "Sugar" and "Irish" as well as an acoustic version of "You Wanted More," whose presence helps fill out the collection even if it adds ever the slightest feeling of padding to a collection that's a good, basic overview/introduction to Tonic.

Love Tonic!

Tonic, has always been one of my favorite bands! As with every greatest hits album, there will be a few songs die-hard fans will miss, but for the most part it has all of their major hits such as "If You Could Only See" "You Wanted More" and "Mean To Me." I've never a big fan of "Irish," but overall, this album is a great pickup for the casual fan. FYI: Tonic has reunited and are working on a new album in the near future.

hey hey

hey hey what an album. during the alt rock movement of the early and mid 90's Tonic was a flagship for change and set the bar for a lot of up and coming bands. Their 97 smash "If you could only see" still gets massive air play 10+ years later. Good Job guys. You all deserve it.

Song selection?

First of all, a bigger Tonic fan there is not. But honestly I was torn about whether or not it was appropriate to give this five stars. There aren't many weak Tonic songs on any of their three songs, but there are a few great ones that are missing. I think "Head on Straight," "Roses," "Future Says Run," and "Wicked Soldier" could have easily been on here (at least two of these were actual singles, I believe, as I'd heard them on the radio before). The only inexplicable choice on here is "Irish" (was it a single??). It's not a bad song, but there were much better ones out there. Plus, three different versions of "If You Could Only See" on a single disc seems like overkill. Sure it's their best known song, but don't wear it out! Certainly they could find another version of a different song to put on here. But I guess this whole review is moot, because honestly, if you like Tonic enough to buy this but you're not willing to buy all three of their albums, you'll be satisfied with what you get here. I'd strongly recommend you listen to those four songs listed above though, as they are just as good as anything Tonic has done.

And that's not opinion, that's truth brothers and sisters!

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Vocalist/guitarist Emerson Hart formed the alternative/roots band Tonic in 1993 with guitarist Jeff Russo (a childhood friend), bassist Dan Rothchild, and drummer Kevin Shepard. After gigging around Los Angeles, the foursome signed with A&M Records. For the recording of their debut album, producer Jack Joseph Puig (Jellyfish, the Black Crowes) gave Tonic a decidedly rootsy feel, with the addition of lap steel and mandolin. The album, titled Lemon Parade, was released in July 1996. After replacing...
