Album Review

Catastrophe Ballet finds Christian Death at its early peak, both focused on and committed to the music. The subject matter revolves around the subversive juxtaposition of the religious and the erotic, while the arrangements utilize minor-key metal guitar riffs and eerie synth backings.

Customer Reviews

So it begins...

The album that gave birth to the controversy revolving around the Band name, Rozz Williams, and valor kand (whom I choose not to give the otherwise common privilege of a grammatically correct textual presence). This album is phenomenal. Rozz has taken a major shift from his tempestuous metaphysical and religious conflicts and we see him maturing into an artist, dabbling into Absurdist and Surrealistic lyrical stylings that would be more fully conceptualized with his solo career as a Spoken Word/Industrial/Cabaret/Performance artist. The original version of Sleepwalk (found on The Iron Mask and The Best of Christian Death Featuring Rozz Williams) is much darker, and, on a subjective note, much better. Other key tracks include Beneath His Widow, The Drowning, Awake at the Wall, Cervix Couch, and Electra Descending. Despite valor's history of douchiness his contributions on this album are fair, and that's as best as he's ever done and likely ever will.

This is the best album

This album is one if the best goth albums. You will also live ASHES.

It's been 10 years since I first listened to this album, and I still listen to it regularly.

Cartoonish labelling aside; I will say there is some poetic spoken word and instrumental pieces among the other lovable music. Skip the superimposed "Beneath His Widow" song, I don't know what that thing is but it wasn't on any of the other releases and isn't a part of the album. Too bad the booklet is missing from this download as the photo of Rozz Williams struck me as otherworldly and alien when I first saw it and still does! Just the fact that the cover art is timeless looking should be an indication to the curious of the sounds contained within. I could go on about each individual song but you should really listen to it yourself and find your own perceptions of it.

Biography

Formed: 1979 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

The founding fathers of American goth rock, Christian Death took a relentlessly confrontational stand against organized religion and conventional morality, with an appetite for provocation that made Marilyn Manson look like Stryper. Regardless of who was leading or performing in the group, Christian Death set themselves up to shock, both in their cover art and their lyrics, which wallowed in blasphemy, morbidity, drug use, and sexual perversity. Their self-consciously controversial tactics set them...
