Album Review
Singer/songwriter Ferraby Lionheart's debut album Catch the Brass Ring is an earthy and melodic collection of folky Baroque pop. Showcasing Lionheart's sweetly yearning vocals and quirkily imagistic lyrics, the album is a heartfelt mix of intimate piano and guitar driven pieces that often grow into larger moments punctuated by deft horn and string arrangements. In that sense, Lionheart will most surely draw favorable comparisons to such iconic '60s artists as the Beatles, Harry Nilsson and Brian Wilson. In truth, Lionheart's melodic pop most closely resembles the work of Elliott Smith and in that sense, fans of Smith should find much to enjoy here. Tracks such as "Small Planet" and "The Car Maker" are nothing short of minor and melancholy would-be classics in their own right and the similarly engaging "Under the Texas Sky" is a bittersweet lullaby that recalls the ghost of Townes Van Zandt. Interestingly, while Lionheart largely sticks to delicate pop he does mix things up with a bit of country twang and even some New Orleans street beat rhythms. While somewhat low-key and not as outwardly hip as the work by some of his more rock-oriented contemporaries, Lionheart's Catch the Brass Ring is nonetheless a sparkling little grower of an album.

top 3 songwriters of 2007
This is a great album and a great songwriter. In 2007 my favorite songwriters of this year are Ferraby Lionheart, Sufjan Stevens and Richard McGraw. These guys remind me of the classic singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s. Many indie artists these days are a little too trendy and don't have great songs. But artists like Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan...it's all about the song for these men, and ultimatley, that's all that matters, not the fashion, not the funny noises and production, not the hype or hipster artificiality.
To Quote Metric...
....”Everything has been done” “YAWN” Another singer-songwriter who can write some what catchy meoldies with some interesting lyrics but after listening to this guy I was left with a cold feeling. And I will never understand why some users like Shoes Tied will bash much better bands like Animal Collective, Neutral Milk Hotel, Beirut and Jamie T and then go and praise the overrated Ferraby Lionheart, the freaking Shins and the horrible The Good, The Bad and The Queen. But that was ranting. I’ll give Mr. Lionheart 2 stars for effort but no more because an annoying nasaly voice can't be saved by boring clichéd folk songs
What a Songwriter, What a Voice!
Wow, I haven't been able to stop listening to this album since I bought it on a hunch. For some reason the tunes remind me of Beatles tunes and Lionheart's vocals sound like Rufus Wainwright. The textures are beautifully sparse with a refreshing emphasis on acoustic bass which sounds beautiful. Highlights are the haunting "Vermont Avenue," and the catchy "Before We're Dead," but the really shocking thing is how consistently good the album is (in fact, probably the weakest song is his take of "Pure Imagination" which is far from bad). Anyway, if you want to hear some remarkable songwriting, this is an album for you!
