iTunes Review
Damien Jurado is that rare singer-songwriter who doesn’t start with his own feelings. The Seattle-based songwriter is a storyteller and the tales are usually pretty grim. Over more than a half dozen engaging albums, he’s been quietly amassing a catalog second to none. With his now established backing band of bassist and cellist and harmony singer Jenna Conrad and drummer Eric Fisher, Jurado has a consistent framework at his disposal. This doesn’t stop him from stripping things down to the essentials when need be (the cheap keyboard and hushed acoustic guitar of “Trials,” the mild symphonic sweep of cello and guitar of “Last Rights”); but it does enable him to kick into carefully modulated gear with the peppy cruise of the album opener, “Gillian Was A Horse,” where Conrad traces Jurado’s upbeat melody with unison and harmony vocals that add a sea breeze ease to the stilted anger hiding beneath the surface. Jenna Conrad’s “Best Dress” slowly cranks up the amps, while the electric guitars shadowing “Coats of Ice” adds an extra sense of menace to a tune that admits the “bottle of pills never seemed to work.” The dark sentiments are often wrapped in a deceptive sweetness.

Standing Tall
This is a rock of solid songwriting. I downloaded it this morning, and have listened to it through 4 times. If you have never listened to Damien this is a great start. If you are a fan you may be pleasantly surprised at how fresh these recordings are. Damien sounds as if he is in top form, keeping a groove going throughout the entire CD. This disc ends too soon. There is not one ounce of drag here. It ends, and I want more. I tip my hat to you sir.
One of our generations best songwriters. In any genre.
Another stellar effort by Damien and his bandmates. This guy doesn't write a bad song...ever. Production sounds real good, not overdone and a far cry from when he used to record on 4-track tape or on his little hand held tape recorder or cassette deck. Although that stuff is good too. It doesn't matter what medium a great song is recorded on. A great song is a great song no matter what. His live show will make you weap.
Magnificent Rendering Of Life As We Live It....
Songs that bring meaning and a richness to those otherwise unnoticed and mundane moments in life that should not go unnoticed. Damien Jurado notices them and has created his masterpiece, in my opinion. Telling your girlfriend/wife that you're tired of arguing... "just put your best dress on...I'm tired of fighting... let's take it out on the town...." is any man's lament to true love. Try "Go First" or my favorite "Best Dress" and then just spend the best ten bucks you've ever spent...then take your wife or girlfriend out somewhere with their best dress on. Beautiful, sorrowful and real...I believe Damien Jurado songs rank amongst the best.
